Water leak between head and block

Yes, the block was surfaced.

I left it sit over night and no more water came out, but I am a "rather be safe than sorry" type of guy so I'll take it apart (ugh!!) tonight or tomorrow and take the head in to be checked. I'll also order a new head gasket, most likely from Datsun, err Nissan :).

I'd guess a fracture in the water jacket in the head... and when you torqued it down to a straight block - the fracture opened up on top of the gasket. You may have to take the head to a machine shop so they can magniflux the head - the crack may not be visiable with the head off the block.

Be very careful pulling the head back off - so that you don't damage the gasket in the process. Damaging the gasket while removing the head -can mislead you in all directions...

Okay, removed the head tonight - question concerning Felpro head gaskets - do you use a sealer or not when installing? I did not when I installed this one - don't recall if it was felpro's instructions or something I read. The manuals, both Datsun and Haynes, says to use a sealer. So did I goof up? Still taking the head in tomorrow to be checked. Will let ya know the verdict from them.

It's been a while since I've done this job, but I seem to recall that I did use a spray sealer on the gasket.

Looks like fel pro has three types of head gaskets as well, so this might affect if you use a sealant or not. If the instructions say to use one, then you should. Still suspect the head, however.

Just checked further. Both the Haynes and Clymer manuals specifically state not to use anything on the gasket.

The 1970 Datsun Service manual says to spread sealing agent (whatever that is) on the block, put on the gasket, and then put sealing agent on the gasket (head side) before installing the head.

I used the Haynes manual many years ago, so I don't think I used a gasket sealer. I was thinking about when I replaced the intake manifold on my Mustang. I know I used copper sealing gasket spray on those gaskets.

I think you did the right thing not using anything on the gasket.

Well, the machine shop looked at the head - first thing noticed was the surface was not "glass" smooth, felt like a real fine file, the grooves running across the head which would give small channels for the water to seep to the outside - no I had not noticed that. When they went to surface it they discovered it had "high" opposite corners. They had to take .005 to get it flat and smooth. My lesson here - check items purchased off eBay closely. It was rebuilt so I figured it was all good to go. Thank you all for your input/suggestions. Good group here. Should get her back on the road next week - after a relaxing long weekend.

I recently purcahsed a Nissan head gasket from the dealer,had to order it but arrived in a couple of days.I would strongly suggest using OEM parts for any engine assembly situation when available.There is also the possibility you head bolts are stretched and not giving the correct clamping effect needed for even torque.L24 head gasket part #11044-27L01 your napa gasket may be defective,pull the head and double check your surfaces,Good Luck!
