Overhead at a car show last weekend

"Apples and oranges. You are talking about different product lines. Carl's statement was referring to changing the brand name...snip..."
"Call it brands, call it product lines. Call it swiss cheese. None of those examples you cited show any time that a car company has changed the brand name."
"But those "mistakes" aren't mistakes at all. As Steve pointed out, they're apples and oranges."
"Although I disagree with Carl about how severe Datsun's name change "mistake" was, your comparison isn't valid moonpup. All of the examples you cited are of various companies creating companion brands to capture different portions of the car market. Whereas Nissan simply erased all traces of the Datsun brand and replaced it with Nissan."

All these responses are the result of individuals who may not have understood the intent of my post.

After reading this..."One could argue that the bigger mistake was pinning the 'Datsun' name on a Nissan-designed, Nissan-engineered and Nissan-manufactured product, and hence misleading people into believing that it was a Datsun-designed, Datsun-engineered and Datsun-manufactured product.", I merely used a tad bit of sarcasm :devious: to point out other firms who have used brand names that are different from the parent company to sell their products.

Period. That's it. Nothing about actually changing the name. Nothing about what their intent was for using a different brand name for marketing purposes. Nothing concerning how that brand name came about whether through acquisitions or dreamed up in the marketing department.

So far it seems Jackhammer was the only one who "got it". :D

I got ya, moonpup,

I put a card in the windows that says in big letts, "1978 Datsun 280 Zed" and people will STILL ask me what kind of car it is! But then again, one guy yesterday called it "a rare King Cobra" whatever that is; I think he was comparing it to the Mustang II.

Naw...too easy! (3 people) LOL

(sigh)........that's different! Car names are what we were discussing.

Alright, here's where the thread jumps the shark.......oh wait, that reference wouldn't be so culturally relevant these days.

Exactly! I have no clue what that means... ROFL

As it has turned out, Nissan has recovered nicely from whatever damage changing the name might have caused. It would take a detailed analysis of their books to see if things dipped...

As to the argument that they never should have used the name Datsun in the first place, having a war criminal with the name Nissan is a pretty powerful reason not to use the name Nissan. Even Porsche had to overcome that... Dr. Porsche spent a bit of time in prison for his involvement in WWII. His health went bad and he died shortly after being released. Porsche's involvement with Hitler still comes up to this day.

That might have been because of the quality of the point making, rather than the point being made. :)

Never mind, at least you bagged one. And Tomohawk doesn't count because I'm still not 100% sure he understood that your point was, er, missing the point. LOL

You mean that there was a Mr Nissan.....???!!! WOW. That's one that got left out of the history books. I guess he must be the guy that wrote his name in big letters on the top of your engine, huh?

I love these comedy threads. :bunny::love:
