Can anyone tell me where I can buy the trim piece the goes on the rear deck lip on series one cars. Z's-ondabrain mentioned he thought they were still available through someone. I've included a picture of what I'm talking about.

If the one for a 72 is the same i have a couple...

The only differences between series 1 rear deck luggage riser trims and later 240z riser trims is, the series 1 trims have fewer horizontal ridges molded into the front face of the trim piece. Otherwise they are identical and the difference is only detectible on very close inspection.

They are extremely hard to find in NOS condition from my own experience.

It looks like there are two types of luggage riser trim pieces for 240Zs. One is longer on the side that faces the luggage area and the other has sides that are both about the same length. #32 has the one with the longer side and that made sense to me because the carpet in series one cars goes up the luggage riser and is covered by the trim piece. However, the trim pieces I have from #237, #331, #882, and 10/70 and 3/71 parts cars all have the trim piece with equal length sides. My 5/72 has the trim piece with the longer side, so I am not sure which is correct for which years. It looks like the only ones still available are the ones with the longer side (the ones sold be Eiji at Datsun Spirit). Does anyone know for sure what is correct for which years?

Mike, my 7/71 car has the one with a longer side, and is original. I can no longer say for certain (since the car is gone), but I think the 10/70 car had the equal length part.

My 5/71 car has the piece with unequal lengths.

My June 1974 USA & Canada parts book shows part #74965-E4100 up to 8/71 and then part #74965-E8200 from 9/71 to 7/73, but it seems that is not always correct regarding dates of part changes.

Mike, as always, you described the differences perfectly as I struggled to make a coherent statement of comparison in my post above. One thing I am 100% certain of though, is the short or equal length sided trim was on my 1/71 series 1 car and the carpet did go up the luggage riser and under this trim piece holding the carpet securely in place.

As for later cars, my assumption had always been, since the carpet did not go up the luggage riser, the wider trim was used to cover the underlying painted luggage riser.

No first hand knowledge, just an assumption on the latter point.

Dan, your car must be a series 1 then with the plastic storage bins instead of the ones built into the rear deck? I agree with the reasoning you layed out regarding the change to cover the bottom of the luggage riser since it would be visable now with the series two storage bins. Interesting that they didn't make the change for several months (until around July-Sept 71) after the series 2 features were introduced beginning in Jan 71.

Mike, the problem with having one of the very last series 1 cars is, it is assumed that any car built after 12/70 is automatically catagorized in the next series. This also applies when looking for correct parts in the parts CD, which stops at 12/70 for all series 1 parts. Yes, my car has all of the characteristic parts of series 1 cars.

I have no answer as to why the late change over with the riser trim well into the series 2 production. It may have been needed time to tool a new part upon the realization that the relocated storage bins created a problem which couldn't be covered up with more flat black paint.

Now-------, about those black plastic storage bin covers on series 1 cars. I need a nice, uncracked one for the passenger side that covers the jack.

Sorry, just had to throw that in. I am now going to go stand in the corner.
