Posted May 28, 200816 yr comment_249041 Hey guys hoping someone can help me out here.I live in Las Vegas, and recently bought myself a 77 280z. This is my toy, that I am restoring. However, I'd still like to have it registered, as it will be a work in progress. I went to get it smogged, and it failed miserably.CO ~10% 2.5% is maxHC ~1200 500 is maxPretty bad..I think its because its running extremely rich. There is definately a gas smell coming from the exhaust. Also the gas mileage definately seems really bad, about as bad as my 90 mustang gt.Anyone have any idea what I could do to fix it? I checked the EGR valve and I think its faulty, so I'll be replacing that. Could this be the sole cause? Or do I need to have the AFM adjusted? What else could I check/do at home as I dont want to spend the horrendous charges of a shop? Thanks. May 28, 200816 yr comment_249046 The EGR valve won't be the sole cause of those bad readings. Bad mileage and fuel smell sound like you have EFI component problems. I wouldn't touch the AFM adjustment without something to read the results which I do have but most people don't at home. You need to go through the component and functional systems tests as outlined in the FSM. May 28, 200816 yr comment_249068 How does it run in general? Smoke or vapor from the exhaust? How do the plugs look? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/28262-emissions/#findComment-249068 Share on other sites
May 29, 200816 yr Author comment_249125 Engine runs fine. When it first starts, while cold, it does emit a small amount of visible vapor, however once warmed up its not visible. While cold if you were to stick your hand near the tail pipe you will get little black dots, I'm assuming thats carbon.I havnt checked the spark plugs, but wont have a chance to work on her til friday evening.
