obxtrainman Posted June 7, 2008 Share #1 Posted June 7, 2008 I just changed the oil pan gasket. I painted the engine block, and engine compartment while I was at it. I now have a big gear oil spot under the car. It looks like its coming from between the dust cover and the front of tranny. I'm going to assume it's the front oil seal in the tranny. Now for the big question, how hard is it to change once the tranny is dropped?
sblake01 Posted June 7, 2008 Share #2 Posted June 7, 2008 You basically just pull the front cover and remove and replace the seal. I usually do the gasket at the same time.
beandip Posted June 8, 2008 Share #3 Posted June 8, 2008 Did you change the oil in the tranny by chance? If you over filled it this could cause a leak .
sblake01 Posted June 8, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 8, 2008 Kinda hard to overfilll a trans if you do it right as the oil will leak out of the fill hole when it reaches it. Reminds me of the guy a few months ago that filled his tranny through the shifter hole and the excess oil caused a fire.
obxtrainman Posted June 8, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted June 8, 2008 I didn't change the tranny oil. I knew all a long there was a leak there. While I was cleaning the engine, I scraped a lot of dried mess off of the front of the dust cover and just under the front of the tranny. I guess the mess was keeping it from being so obvious a leak.Anyhow, I just came back from a great little test drive. The new oil pan gasket stopped that leak. Now my engine block is pontiac blue, the oil pan looks new also:love: It really cleaned up in there. I am now ready to let someone fix the floor pans, and paint my sweet baby.I didn't see the tranny gasket listed in BD auto. The seal looks to be about five bucks.
