Ed Posted August 29, 2002 Share #2 Posted August 29, 2002 Use some double sided tape. And on the body kits go to Motorsports
zorro Posted August 30, 2002 Share #3 Posted August 30, 2002 Right on Ed, apart from double sided tape, the other alternative is a poly urethane not like the one used for your windscreen that stays soft but one used for sealing panels it will stay rubbery but will set and keep the sucker on for good. EScanlon Posted August 30, 2002 Share #4 Posted August 30, 2002 On the subject of the double sided sticky tape, they are referring to the one you get at the Auto Parts Store. It is a rubber based just about 1/16" thick and has a sticky film on it that will NOT bleed or discolor your paint. There are other double sticky tapes out there that are spongier and / or have adhesive that will not hold or will discolor paint. Personally I recommend the 3M brand. Whatever you do, DO NOT EPOXY or GLUE it in place, as my IPO* did. You will be guaranteed to peel or damage the paint if you should have to remove it for ANY reason.(* IPO = Idiot Prior Owner)
zorro Posted August 30, 2002 Share #5 Posted August 30, 2002 Yep 3M definetly is the best may cost the most but works. IPO huh I love it my previous owner of the 2+2 definetly was.
St.stephen Posted September 3, 2002 Share #6 Posted September 3, 2002 How about just purchasing a new one rather than "rigging" it to stay on?
laffeaux Posted September 3, 2002 Share #7 Posted September 3, 2002 The emblems are not always available new.In my case they were removed for painting (by the previous owner), and the mounting tabs broke off. The emblems were in good condition otherwise. I just a bit of Silicon Glue on the backs and they have stayed on with no probelms.
halz Posted September 4, 2002 Share #8 Posted September 4, 2002 I have to agree with the previous post. Clear silicone is ideal. It will not damage the paint and you can 'adjust' the badge for a while after you stick it on to get the angle perfect. When you're happy, you can temporarily tape the badge while the silicone sets. To remove the badge in the future, simply run a piece of fishing line behind the badge and then rub off the remaiing silicone from the paintwork. I have used this method for years and never lost a badge. I can't imagine that double sided tape would allow the badges to sit nice and close to the paintwork..? EScanlon Posted September 5, 2002 Share #9 Posted September 5, 2002 The tape is only about 1/16" or less thick. If you trim it close to the emblem, it would be very difficult to discern. Many manufacturers are using it to hold various emblems in place in lieu of a gasket. I've heard clear silicon is slightly acidic an shouldn't be used on cars? anyone else heard this. Windscreen fitters might know, as they always use the black sealant. I used heaps of silicon on my 240z ages ago, but dont own the car anymore. I agree its great for sticking on badges, and stopping leaks, but if its gonna eat into your car I wouldnt be using it in the future.
