Getting more out of my Z

Hello...When i first got my car i thought wow this thing can go when u want it to...but now it's two three weeks after that point and i have only gotten it to top out at 115mph...That is pretty damn quick for a me, and my first car and when i take my friends for a ride cause they love the car, they are like WoW this thing GOES...But i was wondering what can i do to get more power...I don't know anything about different heads and what they do or camshafts and blah blah balh....all the stuff wich seems pretty advanced..so my 240Z is completely stock...dual su's...peopel keep sayin that if i put some tripple carbs on there i will be gettin more but is it worth it if i am gonna have to do all that tuneing, some say it's lots some say it isn't much....i am willing to learn and such... But i should be able to get pretty decent performance out of these dual su's shouldn't I? And i was thinking i need a new air filter the on in there is toast...so i called around and the only place that has one in stock is a k&N filter tis' like 80 bux cnd funds.... is it worth it?? and shoule i keep the side draft going or take that off and have a differnt filtr for each carb?? what is the best way to do it with the dual su's???? Exaust... Ok i have WAY to many damn civics and **** going around on the cruise night here in town with those mufflers that sound likea chainsaw..i got a new muffler that was put on not too long befor ei got the car btu the exaust pipes comin for the engine seems asthough it could be repaced..now that i think of it the pipes probrally doing have much to do with the air flo or do they??? sorry pretty new to this stuff but i am here to learn and hopefully you guys cna help me out..

just curious i accidently filled the oil up a tad too much and i noticed that it wasn't runnign smooth at all.. now the oil has dropped down to the good range and it's running REALLY nice today so i am prayin that it is gonna stay that way still have a minor problem with pre-ingnition or somehting like that but i wil try and fix that..thanks

the only way you would notice a performance increase with triple carbs would be if you had and performance cam. the triple carbs only provide more fuel....not power. So when ur runnin the stock SU's (very good carbs btw, unless uve got the "flattops") and ur up in the high RPM's with some performance mods on the engine...the engine needs more fuel and the SU's cant do that but the triples can provide it....thereby allowin the engine to do what it needs.

for performance wise theres so much you can do. Electronic ignition is probably the first thing you would want to do...improves your mileage, idle, and requires less work. A performance cam would help, bigger air horns on the SU's, and E31 head, L28 valves, a nice 2 1/4 exhaust, some headers, theres almost an endless list of things. All depends on your budget and waht u want.

Headers and a 2 1/2 " exhoust will help but you will loose some low end power , now as was stated before me you added a cam and ignition you would gain more with a triple set up but mostly the triples come in at top end. There is a guy in Seattle that runs in the 12sec. bracket at the drags and is running SUs . So Dont underestamate these fine carbs, they must be round tops though . You dident mention what you are running , a L 28 or L24 that is a 280 or a 240 , or for that matter a 260. Is it a duce of a 2+2 ? my 2 cents. the best of luck and congrats on the car .

It's a 240Z, there the round tops su's...it needs a new exaust system as i noticed teh other day that when i rev it up abit there is abit of exaust that comes out near the engine well it is somewhere in the engine bay where it shouldn't be thanks guys

Personally if u want to save money keep the twin Su's they are a beautiful carby that if tuned well will run a smooth as a kitten. They are good for fueling your engine up to around 220BHP but then they just can't deliver enough thats where triple webbers come in. Putting an L28 in will give you increased torque over the L24 but the L24 loves to Rev more. Other then that you will have to start modifiying your engine.

I would not say that you do not get a performance increase from tripple carbs only. I have done this twice, and I can tell you that there is a difference. Not a radical difference, but definately an improvement. I will agree that a cam helps a bunch, then the tripples come to life. The increase is very noticible. Is it worth the money??? How much money do you have? If 500 to 1500 hurts a lot, It's probably not worth the money.. I could not help myself. I have never liked constant velocity carbs.... They work well enough, but I never liked the idea that my foot was not directly in control of the throttle opening.. I understand Webers, they are very simple devices that are very tunable...

an L24 with triple carbs will sound very cool at 7000rpm but the cost of them, ouch. $3000NZD ($1500USD) in total for some 42mm tripple webers, manifold, linkage, air filters, etc. which would only give about 41 - 48 extra hp.

I think I would be very happy if I was getting 40 more HP... On a stock motor you are probably only looking at 10 to 20 more HP, if that. I really do not know what the gain is... They are nice.. I got mine from Ebay... cost me $300.00, then I had to put another $350.00 in them to get them where they are today.... While my car is running great, I am still adjusting. I am getting black smoke when at max throttle above 5 grand... Still pulls like a MF, but I still need a little jetting. If you are not afraid to buy a used set, you can save a few bucks.... Though if I had the money I much rather have a new set.

I think you chose well. Rb engines are not redily available in the US... I also am kind of a retro guy... Twin over cam engines produce a lot of power, but they are not a twenty minute valve adjust with a couple of wrenches... and I work on computers all day. I don't want one within 50 feet of my car. So it's carbs, and points for me. I may not make more than a couple hundred HP when I am done,,, but the car is easy to maintain, and infinately dependable... ie not enough power to break anything.

Well it's been awhile since i was here but it's winter now the car is parked untill spring, and money isn't much of an issue as i'm young and still live with my parents so i usually have more money than i know what to do with. So I'm thinking a new exaust and manifold is deffenitly needed right now, so i'm gonna get that..after the floor boards. then i dunno i just wanted to say thanks for everyone helpin me out. should probrally get some new tires first which is als on the the agenda since i get no pick up.. another question if u were racing ur Z so just playin with it.. at what RPM would u launch it at? thanks alot
