Lsd?

Brief, .. to the point. No additional info?

I wonder, everyone seems to want a LSD for their car. Is there really that much improvement? I know that for drag racing it helps you get off the line. But what about other conditions? Is there a time when it may work as a disadvantage?

I know that I have driven other vehicles with LSD's in the snow, or on ice they had better traction to get you going, but made turns more dificult.

It could make a difference autocrossing, I suppost during hard corners, you might be able to put more power to the road without spinning the wheels. What do you think? Is it worth the trouble to buy and install an LSD.

That was the short answer! And I can confirm - no "240Z" ( i.e. "HS30" or "HLS30" ) was ever fitted with an LSD as standard from the factory.

They were however available right from the beginning as a Sports Option part.

The only S30-series Z to get an LSD as standard was the Z432 ( "PS30" ) and of course its lightweight sister the Z432-R ( "PS30-SB" ) - but they in fact used the beefier R192 diff. which was kind of a superannuated R180.

Personally speaking, the No.1 mod that I would perform on any S30-series Z would be to install an LSD ( with a "nice" ratio ) that had a relatively low breakaway setting. It will make the car understeer more, but to counteract this you can throw the car into corners and steer it on the throttle. Its not necessarily the fastest way around a corner, but it is certainly the most entertaining. Too high a breakaway setting makes the car handle like a race car on the street ( and that can be a real pain ).

On the limit with no LSD, the nearside driving wheel will spin up and cornering traction is lost. You don't realise how bad this is until you try a Z with an LSD fitted.

All those posts about "can a stock Z get rubber in second?" just prove that people have no idea what they are talking about. When you break traction on one wheel it does not count! Its when you break traction with both driving wheels that things start to get entertaining. Money spent on a good quality LSD unit is money well spent indeed...........

Thanks for the long answer... I may have to look into finding one for my car. The question will then be which ratio to go for. Do I want lots of acceleration, or more top end. I will have to think about this for a while.

Loads of info on this site about ratios...the only problem is trying to remember where it all is. There is a very good link to a gear ration site. If no one posts it this weekend, I'll get it to you on Monday when I'm back at work.

It's really good in that you feed it what box, diff and wheel size you have and it produces a graph on revs vs mph for each gear.

A must have tool for you.

From memory...a 81-83 ZX 5 speed with a 3.9 rear will be great off the line without too much high highway revs.

As Alan says, only one black line means nothing....if you see two then be on the watch out.

I do not live in Australia.... But my misguided american knowlege says that there are many places where there is wide open road for miles, and miles.... unless you are big into autocrossing or drag racing you might consider a gear ratio that will give you more top end... I have always wanted to go more than 200mph myself. Not that a Zed will likely get me there , bu t someday. Any way with the right stuff, and a couple of mile long stretch of road 160 coud be a blast..... Just a thought .... Don't forget aerodynamics, cars tend to fly off the road at higher speeds, if you are not carefull.. Be careful, but have fun...

Thats cool I probably need to setup that way myself... I want to become more active in local autocrossing.... But the need for speed is a hard call to ignore... there's something about moving at 100+ meters per second that is just hard ro resist... But of course if you hit something at that speed you will look like the bugs that hit your windscreen.

And you now what the last thing to pass through a bugs mind is when he hits your windshield is.....

His arse hole.

Sorry I couldn't resist... old joke ya know.
