Darbji280z Posted June 18, 2008 Share #1 Posted June 18, 2008 Well apparently it stopped working after the previous owner replaced the clutch. I finally looked into it today and the cable’s not turning at all. It appears to be in the trans. Idk why its not turning. Can I get instructions on reseating it into the trans? m4xwellmurd3r Posted June 18, 2008 Share #2 Posted June 18, 2008 it could be that the gear is missing/broken? you'd have to pull out the sending unit to see what the gear looks like. I'm not too sure on how it goes in exactly. but I know there's a bolt that holds the sending unit to the trans, with a colored gear on the end of it. Pop's Z Posted June 18, 2008 Share #3 Posted June 18, 2008 Darbji, I know it may be really obvious, but be sure to drain the transmission lube if you are going to pull the speedo gear out. If you haven't moved the cable it shouldn't have pulled out of the cog at the trans end, however that being said it could have been put back wrong and not been seated in the trans speedo cog correctly when the clutch was re-done. There is a little protrusion on the cable that fits into a slot in the cog. You have to rotate the cable little by little to get it to fit in that slot. Try re-doing the cable into the trans first(fix the easiest thing). If that doesn't do it I would suspect a broken cable. I don't think the cog would be the problem. FWIW when I switched out my 4-spd for a 5-spd the speedo cog in the trans had to be rotated 180 degrees and a new retaining slot cut into it for the retaining thingum and the speedo to work, but I don't see how that would be the problem for you though. Good luck. Mike
kinfish Posted June 18, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 18, 2008 Speedometer cables do break. The cable in my 240Z broke after 15 years at 168,000 miles. Pull cable off speedometer and try turning cable with pair of pliers. Do not try to pull the cable out of the sheathing since you may disengage it at transmission. If it is broken the cable will turn freely.Fix is to replace the cable with new assembly.

Darbji280z Posted June 19, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted June 19, 2008 The gear is stripped.... Anyone know where I can get a new one?
ktm Posted June 19, 2008 Share #7 Posted June 19, 2008 Courtesy Nissan - www.courtesyparts.comYou order the gear by its color (assuming your differential is stock).
sblake01 Posted June 19, 2008 Share #8 Posted June 19, 2008 The gear is stripped.... Anyone know where I can get a new one?I believe that's the yellow 17 tooth gear. I've got on if you want it. PM me.
sblake01 Posted June 19, 2008 Share #9 Posted June 19, 2008 I'm sorry, I spoke too soon. Disregard that last post. I just looked through the speedo gears and I don't have a 17t. Only an 18t(3.70), and a 19t(3.90). And the 17t would actually be black.
clarkeomdahl Posted June 19, 2008 Share #10 Posted June 19, 2008 OK - While we are on the subject - my '71 is going 100 MPH (according to the speedometer) even when it isn't moving! The odometer is still counting the miles and when I pull the cable from the back of the speedometer, it turns turns freely. So, is the needle just stuck (and is there a way to unstick it?) or do I need to replace the guage (sp?) or would a new cable remedy the problem. Maybe part of the cable has worn out. Sure hope its the cable! Thanks in advance.
sblake01 Posted June 19, 2008 Share #11 Posted June 19, 2008 It's not the cable since your odometer still works. One cable drives them both. I don't know about 'unsticking' it because I've never run across that problem.
clarkeomdahl Posted June 21, 2008 Share #12 Posted June 21, 2008 Thanks for your response, Stephan. Seems strange to me too. I might start a new thread and see if anyone else has any ideas.
