Posted June 21, 200816 yr comment_251418 I'm restoring my 1971 240z. Well, the engine runs really good but every time i drive the car, it smells so bad it makes me wanna throw up. It smells like exhaust and it gets all over my clothes and by the time I get to work in the morning, I smell like a dirty ol' mechanic. I want to restore my interior but the smell from the car is holding me back because I dont want the upholstry smelling like exhaust. Any ideas on how to get rid of the smell? I also notice that it smokes alot from the exhaust tail pipe. June 21, 200816 yr comment_251419 Do a search on this site on "Exhaust fumes". It's been covered before several times. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/28493-help-my-car-stinks-litarally/#findComment-251419 Share on other sites
June 28, 200816 yr comment_252201 had this problem, look for leaks, exhaust leaks and body leaks under the car and seals. taillight gasket can pass gases also. I had this problem and it annoyed me so much, my shirt smelled like exhaust after a 2 hour ride! a bad air/fuel mixture can increase the smell also. mine was having a different AFM and was running a bit more rich, but I didn't have time to solve it.good luck.
