the_cafe Posted June 22, 2008 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2008 I told my buddy that I'd help him move out of his apartment. Any way long story short, we've been toying around the idea about renting a rental trailler to tow behind my zed to make the move easier. ended up asking a local fab shop and he said he thinks he might be able to fab up some kind of hitch to the bumper for $ 125 bucks. B4 i do this, how much weight can this car tow? I'll need to know in order to estimate which trailer i should rent. i'd like to get as big of trailer as i can so i can cut down on the trips. thank you. geezer Posted June 22, 2008 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2008 Better off using the money to rent a truck to make the move in my opinion.
hls30.com Posted June 22, 2008 Share #3 Posted June 22, 2008 The Z was made to haul your a$$ and one more(unless you have a 2+2), not to pull a trailer-much less a big trailer. On that note, all national trailer rental places will want to know what you are towing with, and guess what-they won't let you tow with a Z! The liability is too high for them. I had trouble trying to rent a trailer to tow with a small Nissan Truck! Even Home Depot gave me grief over renting a tractor with a front end loader because they said my Dodge 1500 Quad cab was not rated to tow the weight of the trailer and the tractor! Rent a truck for $30 a day and save the Z for fun!
EScanlon Posted June 22, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 22, 2008 Is this a SERIOUS question or is it another of your "troll" questions?
kiwi303 Posted June 22, 2008 Share #5 Posted June 22, 2008 Theres 280ZX tow bars around, theres one on trademe.co.nz right now, but I doubt the bumper would be a solid mounting point on a 240z. I agree with the "get a truck" comment.
nahurry Posted June 22, 2008 Share #6 Posted June 22, 2008 weld it to the rear control arm cross member. believe me, i've seen it done on a 240z.
240znz Posted June 22, 2008 Share #7 Posted June 22, 2008 "240z" and "towing" should never be in the same sentance...ever.
Poindexter Posted June 22, 2008 Share #8 Posted June 22, 2008 The whole car has- as I recall reading in a spec somewhere- a payload of 450 pounds. That doesn't leave much room for cargo- even less for towing I would imagine.
Bonzi Lon Posted June 22, 2008 Share #9 Posted June 22, 2008 My car was purchased with a trailer hitch installed. (so why not use it?) It was employed to move me 750 miles back home from college. Rented the smallest enclosed U-Haul, about 4 foot square, packed it about 3/4 full, ballanced it like a tight rope walker and took off. Pulled real good but got a little squirrely about 55mph. Lets just say it was an interesting trip home, but then I was young and dumb, 1978.:stupid:Do not try the above stunt at home, trained proffessionals were used.Bonzi Lon
Mr Camouflage Posted June 22, 2008 Share #10 Posted June 22, 2008 +1 rent a truck. My old 240z had a tow bar. Should have seen the damage it caused to the chassis.
hls30.com Posted June 22, 2008 Share #11 Posted June 22, 2008 weld it to the rear control arm cross member. believe me, i've seen it done on a 240z.I've seen it done too, but just because something has been done doesn't make it a good idea, or the right thing to do!Any time someone with unknown experience/driving ability/good sense knows a guy who "might be able to fab up some kind of hitch to the bumper" wants to tow the biggest trailer possable behind a small car with neither brakes nor an electrical system that are up to the task, the best answer is rent a truck!1) The Right Tool for the job and all that means.2) Cheeper answer3) No convenient temptation to keep doing something seriously beyond what the car was designed to do.4) No assumed liability for encouraging someone with unknown experience/driving ability/good sense to try something you might feel safe doing because of your experience/driving ability/good sense when that someone may not have the experience/driving ability/good sense necessary to do it!Will
Sailor Bob Posted June 22, 2008 Share #12 Posted June 22, 2008 Just cause you can does not mean you should! I am amazed that you even consider it.
