While you have it, it would be a great thing to the rest of us if you could get a mold made of it to make (or splash?) copies in glass or CF or even plastic. We need to start making new molds for the rarer parts before they are all gone entirely.

I agree, TomoHawk.

I had begun the process of having some made of metal by a friend who had access to some very modern technology where they could somehow make a 3-D image and reproduce it in sheet metal rather quickly. He lost his job (probably bootlegging too many spare parts for his project car), and I lost access to the technology. Does anyone know what it would take to fabricate one of these out of metal? Cost estimates? Also, I have a place nearby that specializes in plastic molding.... what substance / material would be best for this project if I get in to request a quote?

That's currently about US$112. Not too bad if the shipping wasn't an issue. I wonder if there'd be enough market to import a batch of them?

That could be quite feasible as they would be able to be stacked together easily.

Thanks, Kats! That is a nice selection of parts you have available in Japan.

I just put an inquiry in with a fabricator a close distance from me to get an estimate related to the cost of local production in USA.

If there is interest out there in the community, let me know. Who knows, these people I contacted just might be interested in working with me on this. Not holding my breath on this one.... We'll see.

I have no dollar figures yet, but the molding folks got back to me with a question.

What material should they be made of? I have no idea what would be good, so can y'all help me out here? The choices of common materials they use are:

· Nylon

· Polyurethane

· Mineral Filled Resin

· Thermplastic Rubber

· Polyester

· Polycarbonate

· PVC

· Glass Filled Resin

· ABS

· Santo-Prene

· Acrylic

· Acetal

· And many additional types (of which I have no clue what they are yet)

Can someone please chime in with some opinions on what the best material will be for a molded splash pan?

I should be knowing more soon about costs and what they may recommend as a material. We've been playing voice-mail tag (which is encouraging to me, anyway).

John: I think that the ones available in Japan are around $125 made out of fiberglass. And then there is shipping costs to be added, so figure what, another $25 for shipping. And if a bunch of them were ordered, pricing would come down. So in order to be economically viable, the people you contact should come in below that number. The fellow that I bought mine from has done business with that company in Japan that Kats mentioned. They could always be contacted and see what type of price point is available...

Another question on mounting the splash pan. The part of the pan that lies centermost to the motor has two holes. For anyone that has the pan already mounted on their car, is there a special rubber washer or something that goes between the pan and the crossmember? I have seen a few used splash pans that have elongated holes in those places from wear due to movement.

If I put on a splash pan, I would use a rubber gasket in between, and large washers on each fastener, with a rubber wash on each. If it was a metal pan, I would first have it coated with bedliner material or similar first, or just go with a plastic, CF or glass one.

I used to be able to mAke moulds for fiberglass parts ( 4-foot model boats & such.) I'm not sure I could even get someone to part with theirs long enough to make a mold. :cheeky:
