What's your idea of a Poker Run?

If you were on a poker run, what would you expect in terms of roads and speeds? Would you expect to have potty stops or diversions for shopping (antiques, kink-knacks, closeouts, outdoor malls, etc.) marked on the route?

If I understand it correctly, a "poker run" involves stopping at certain points to obtain a game piece as part of the "fun rallye". The "game piece" can really be anything from a playing card to a puzzle solving clue to rallye directions; depending on how the fun rallye is set up. I didn't do the rallye at Daytona, but I heard it was fun. Fred and I won the rallye in Dallas after managing to get lost a couple of times. We got so lost in Syracuse that we just stopped and went to a couple of junk yards. We did that in Long Beach also.

The rallye shouldn't last more than a couple of hours, end at a nice place to get food, and involve at least one potty stop. I'm not a big fan of diversion attractions. You're supposed to be on a rallye, not shopping. Keep it focused.

My BIG suggestion is that the rallye directions and route get tested by people who aren't involved with planning it at least a couple of times the week before the event to make certain that everything works properly. Nothing worse than lousy directions.

It seems that many people think of a poker run as something more like a WRC rally, where you drive along at about 60-80 MPH ( or more!) on closed or country roads to the different stops. I've been on poker runs in a powerboat, sailboat, and airplane, and with exception to the airplane, you aren't going too fast and just take your time to follow the instructions instead of trying to set a record for the shortest time. If you really want to get finished fast, just don't get lost!

Above all just relax and enjoy the ride.

The poker-run for the '01 Kingston convention was set up to allow participants to get out and see some of the local scenery, so it daudled (?) along good secondary roads. The mid-point was the village of Merrickville which is known for it's artisan community. No high speed or rally type sections. Part of the Poker Run material included a map of Eastern Ontario, just in case someone got lost.

As you said "relax and enjoy the ride" is the intent.

I'm assuming you are talking about the convention? The "poker run" event is very well defined and explained in the "How to put on a national convention" book you should have from the ZCCA. I'm sure you are getting people who want to go fast and race around. Nothing unique about that. Technically, a "poker run" is a described course that includes a number of stops to obtain a playing card. Best poker hand at the finish wins. Thus...Poker Run

I'm sure you are getting people who want to go fast and race around. Nothing unique about that. the one in Daytona convention was more of a scavenge hunt picking up items or clues at different stops and to avoid speeders they included a time factor where you got points for being closer to the predetermined time run by organizers

The reason I am concerned is because at a recent regional meet ( about 40 miles south of Indianapolis, IN) there was a poker run through the countrtyside where a car (a 350Z) was going too fast and rolled over.
