Round top flat top, side draft, triples, I am confused.

I have my new to me 1972 Z E83 intake and a set of 2 barel carbs that are square in nature. They are stamped Webers. The Webers I had on MGs were all side draft, these draft from the top. What are they?

I have pics but couldnt get them to post.

What you have is a set of Weber down draft conversion carbs. It was an aftermarket kit that was popular at one time. The kit included the carbs, linkage, and the hook shaped extensions needed to adapt the down draft Webers to the side draft intake manifold.

From what I have read it was mostly intended to provide a way to replace the "Flat Top" emission control carbs that came on some 73's and all 74's with carbs that ran better but still could pass an emission test.

They are still available here: http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/PFFC02

But the prevailing opinion around this site seems to be that they are best avoided.

(I am not sure, but I believe that most jurisdictions that test emissions exempt cars made before 76.)

You can get pictures of the various double carb setups that came on the Z here:

That is the place to go (in my opinion) for rebuilt SUs if you are so inclined.

I agree with Walter that it sounds like you have Weber two-barrel conversions. While I would not convert a 240Z to those dual Weber carbs myself, if you already have them, and if they are well-jetted and tuned, there's probably no compelling reason to replace them. If you do decide to replace them, a matched pair of round-top SUs from any '70-72 240Z would be my recommendation for a stock or mildly modified car. For a modified car, I'd recommend triple carbs, either Weber or Mikuni.

Thank you gentlemen I appreciate it, looks like I have the dreaded DVGs!

OK, I can deal with that, they are running very well and the car is not modified, so for a while I will let that problem rest till they give me problems.
