Zak's Z Posted July 15, 2008 Share #1 Posted July 15, 2008 I just bought an ignition module off ebay for a 1979 280zx but when I got it it reads E12-93. I assume I needed the E12-80 to go with my zx distributor for the 240z electronic ignition conversion I wanted to do. Can I use this module? What year is the E12-93 really from?Any help is appreciated. I searched a bit and found some discussion that said you can use it but need a different vacuum advance possibly. Thanks guys,
Arne Posted July 15, 2008 Share #2 Posted July 15, 2008 E12-93 is from a later ZX, 82-83, IIRC. It has a third terminal on the side. It will work, but will retard the timing unless you do the vacuum advance mod.
Zak's Z Posted July 15, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted July 15, 2008 Thanks Arne.. what does the vacuum advance mod involve?Zak
Arne Posted July 15, 2008 Share #4 Posted July 15, 2008 Not sure. I've never done it. I believe it requires a different vacuum assembly, and then a travel-limiting spacer be made and added. I think beandip has all the info.
sblake01 Posted July 15, 2008 Share #5 Posted July 15, 2008 Can't you just remove the E12-93 module, trash it and replace it with an E12-80? Doesn't the extra terminal on the E12-93 get a signal from the coil for a circuit that isn't needed on cars that don't have that circuit, like anything prior to 82? Arne Posted July 15, 2008 Share #6 Posted July 15, 2008 Yes, Stephen, that's what I did. I found a couple E12-80s for next to nothing and actually gave my E12-93 away for free. I didn't want to mess with the mod. But I've heard that (in some parts of the country) E12-80s are hard to find. Not so, here out West. The wrecking yards are full of old 210s, 510s, 200SXs and pickups with the E12-80.So if you can't find an E12-80, the advance mod should make the E12-93 work. But it does seem simpler to find the right thing from the start.
Zak's Z Posted July 15, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted July 15, 2008 Ya, I'll find one then. Im just annoyed I got the wrong one. I'll try and sort it out with the seller, but I won't hold my breath. I jumped on it because it said it was '79, looked like the e12-80 in the pic and couldn't find one up here in Toronto. If anyone has one they wanna part with send me a pm!Thanks for getting back to me guys.
