...there should be the code on the lock cylinder from the passenger side door...

Can anyone else verify this? I don't have an original with the key code on it - just two very worn copies. And I can't get the code from inside the glove box lid because the PO cut a large square out of the glove box door.

My '72 won't lock without the key (or pushing the lock down from the inside). I usually think of this as an inconvenience of old school technology, but your circumstance has made me think otherwise.

When did the Z-car go with the "improvement" that allows one to lock keys in their car?

DeesZ,

Try holding the handle up while closing the door. If I recall correctly, the owner's manual mentions this.

LOL omg, the things that are said when im gone...

im not offended Doug...

and this isnt the first time i had locked the keys inside my car

the first was when i was gna replace the battery and i had left the keys in the center console and clossed the door on accident and i was putting the battery in and then when i wanted to take the car out around the block to make sure i did everything right, i couldnt get into the car...

so i bent a wire hanger into a hook and went fishing!

i tried pulling down the window just enough to put the hanger thru and amazingly it worked...

when the keys got to the window i had to stick my fingers in the window and i got the keys out, the whole keychain with my lil brass micky mouse on it.

(i need to replace it with Rat Fink)

nc 2 c sm1 apprctes me Bill!!

LOL

and any pics i put up will b rated G so dont get your hopes up too high...

I dont want to get in trouble and i dont want anybody else to get in trouble either.

much love.

Khrystina,

You obviously haven't found our site's record-holding, multiple-page post. I think it's around 60 pages now.

I know that the 240's have a little code on the lock cylinders....some have said passenger side door only, but mine had it on both doors and the hatch too. Mine was missing the sticker in the glove box that was supposedly there on the 240Z. I don't kno if it was there on other models or not, and I don't know if the 280Z got the code on the door locks or not, but it requires taking the door panel off and pulling the lock cylinder to tell unless someone else knows for sure.

It is best to get extra keys made from the code rather than just copying your existing key because your key could be and probably is worn....so your copies would be too. But if you're in a habit of locking your keys in the car, go get some copies made Khrystina.

lulz, in case no one else is willing to admit having checked I think all the "approval pending" labels/this thread are hilarious...

Khrystina, whether you're real or not (no offense), I think you're just what this board needed ROFL And I'm sure there'll be a cop waiting for anyone who attempts to see if she is indeed for real, but I have no problem with playing along til then :D Keep up the good work.

Luck getting your Z up to speed :) My sorted 280 rockets up the grapevine if it's any consolation...

Hi, twsutt... This suggestion sounded good because I've had many older cars that worked that way. Got me to thinking that maybe mine weren't working correctly, so I checked the book (owner's manual) on both my '71 & '72. To quote the '71 manual: "The door will not lock, even if you push the knob down unless you shut the door. This is so that you will not possibly lock all doors leaving your keys inside." (The '72 manual states about the same thing but a little less clearly.) I still wonder when the change was made to favor creature convenience over lock-in prevention.... anyone recall what year?

I think that would be mid 74 when they changed the body style/bumpers etc. and moved the position of the door lock buttons.

it must have been the 280 because I have a late 10/74 260 and you cant push the lock button down unless the door is closed.
