What is the purpose of the damper plate mounted under the differential case mounting front member? Is it needed?

That's an NVH damper. Read through this thread, basically posts 3, 4, and 5, which more or less explains it.

Here's what Nissan published concerning the damper:

TSB # TS75-068A, Sept 3, 1975

“Countermeasures for S30 R180 Differential Noise”

To reduce internal noise in the S30 differential a differential noise damper kit is now available as a service part. Differential noise is caused by the tooth meshing action of the ring and pinion gears, amplified by structural vibration of the vehicle body. The noise damper kit contains a 10 lb mass damper weight which attaches to the differential housing to absorb structural vibration and the necessary attachment hardware.

The kit can be also be applied on the 1970-74 S30, R180 differentials only. This kit should not be used on any 2+2 vehicle due to possible interference with the rear seat belt attachment bolts.

This thread was the result of another I posted about interference between the rear swaybar and drive shaft. According to the shop, the driveshaft flange is hitting the sway bar. Any thoughts on why this problem is occuring?

This can occur if you attempt to use a 280Z rear bar on an earlier car.

If you have a '73 with the hangers for the rear sway bar. Look for a early '74 260Z sway bar. They have a bend in the middle to clear the differential . The end links are all the same. I have an spare pair of the plates that hold the rubber mounts in place if you need them or want to make your own. Gary
