Would anybody be able to tell me what this is, its mounted in the tool box behind the drivers seat on my 73 240, i've been told that its a transistorised ignition. WHat does it do, do i need it and yeah just anyhting about it.

I have never seen one like that .... Behind the seat seems like a strange place for an ignition module... Have you traced the wires down yet?.. I guess you could disconnect it and see if the car still runs..

Its rigged up beside, but not in conjunction with a black wired box which i assume is an alarm system, car electrics are not my strong point, and i don't want to end up with a car that did run fine, now not going, i'd really like to know what it does. What should a transistorised ignition do

If it is some sort of ignition box, it's a type I've never seen before. I think it may have something to do with the alarm, I'm basing this on the light on the left side and the Static above it.

I've never seen an ignition module have a switch on it either. Hard to read the printing on it in the pic.

in 1969 I added an early transistorised ignition to the Honda S 800 Coupe I had in those days. It looked similar and had a switch

to change back to the original untransistorised ignition. There was nothing changed inside the distributor. It was just to give more power to the spark, as I remember. The box had rips for cooling and it was installed in a fresh air flow. I can't imagine to have it in a closed box at the rear or was it laid down there unpluged and forgotten ? In the other case I would bet it is an alarm.

Hmm, you could switch back to the stock ignition with just a flip of a switch? Wouldn't it be nice if they still did it that way? Just think, it's like having a backup ignition if one fails. Kinda makes you wonder why they stopped doing it like that, except they want to sell you another complete ignition when one dies. Guess that is why they make everything so cheap now, so you'll be back to buy another one when the "new" one fails. :tapemouth

If it is wired into the alarm system, perhaps it is designed to interupt, or disable the ignition if someone tries to steal the car.. Look for brand name, model number, etc. try an internet search on that info.... I bet there is info on the net about it.

I'm probally way off here, and I can't really read much of the writeing on it. But, where does that large wire in the middle go to? I used to be in the Car audio business, and judgeing to me that kinda looks like an older radio noise supressor or antenna signal booster. Just thought I'd share my guess here...
