Scarab #153

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow Z lovers,

I was researching Scarabs online and found several postings from this site. I thought you might like to know there is another original factory Scarab out there. I am the second owner and have all the original paperwork. I have a few pictures posted on cardomain.com under the same user name. It is listed as a 1975 280Z (the original donor car). I am trying to find and contact as many Scarab owners as I can. If you are one, know one, or just love old 'Z's reply to my post.

Thanks,

Larry

The one currently for sale on E-Bay is in California...

Yes, but the ad for the one on Ebay says it is #153, and it shows a picture of what is supposed to be the scarab ID plate. See attached picture from the ad. Obviously there is a discrepancy somewhere.

Hmmm.... the cardomain listing that Larry referred to above also shows a picture of what is supposed to be the Scarab ID plate of #153; however this car is red and the car in the ebay ad is dark blue. Here is the link to the cardomain listing and a picture of the ID plate is shown below.

The one on e-bay is not a fake!!!

There are 2 cars numbered #153.

It was a mistake on Scarab's part

Blue Scarab 153 build date 2/28/79

Red Scarab 153 build date 6/1x/79

White Scarab 154 build date 6/21/79 (mine)

I'm guessing the time lapse between the blue and red car (4 months) was sufficient time to lose paperwork/not check the proceeding cars Scarab number.

Again the car is real.

As the seller states though the engine and transmission have been replaced but are period correct. The radiator and fan are not original Scarab. I believe he does have the original Scarab valve covers (rare!).

I've tried to take mine back to as original as possible. It still retains the original engine (bow tie block) and angle plug heads. I replaced the radiator with an original NOS Scarab unit that dat240zg found in Texas and sold to me. I've also replaced the springs and struts with Tokico springsand replacing the original struts with adjustable Illuminas.

I also rebuilt the original FIA calipers using NOS Datsun rebuild kits, one caliper piston was replaced due to damage while taking it apart. I still have one rebuild kit and 3 pistons on the shelf, just in case.

IHMO - the only way the seller on E-Bay can prove it is not a fake - is to display the original bill of sale, and other Scarab Documentation that would have come with the car. It is presented as being a 2 owner car - so the documentation should be available if it is not a fake.

For collector cars - if any question exists - the documentation rules.

FWIW,

Carl B.
