Posted August 14, 200816 yr comment_256530 Hi everyone, I just bought my secound Z car. The first was in the 80's. It has only taken me 20 years to find another. My new Z is only 36 years old. I bought it last sunday from the original owner. It is very original; original steel wheels (No hub caps, orignal radio, everything except the paint. Unfortuanlely he got into a fender bender and had a poor silver paint job done. This next weekend, I'm going to take care of the leaking gaskets. It has been driven 400 miles in the past two year. I have a laudry list of things needing attention. This winter I hope to bring it slowly back to a presentable life. Does anyone know where I can find a website to help figure out the production date? Is there a Z parts store any better than another? I'm thinking about a resto-mod. I'll see once I dig into the body work a little more. Currently, there is work that needs to be done in the floor pan and there is a small amount of rust on the rear hatch sill, I'll probably replace both front fenders (due to hail damage and small amount of rust). The doglegs look good, battery tray looks good. That is all for now. I will post more as things get moving. Thanks for listening. August 14, 200816 yr comment_256531 Welcome aboard, you're in the right place to figure it all out. There are some links to Z stores/parts suppliers in the main menu or look at the top of the page for some commonly used suppliers (advertisers), In addition you can check out Zhome for lots of helpful hints. Your production date is on the plate in the door jamb (drivers side).Good luckSB Edited August 14, 200816 yr by Sailor Bob Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29047-newbie/#findComment-256531 Share on other sites

August 14, 200816 yr comment_256535 If the door jamb tag is missing the VIN will almost certainly give us a close production date. Feel free to add your car to the online spreadsheet listed in my signature. Doing that will show you other cars made around the same time. August 14, 200816 yr comment_256550 Evening to all , Hello Earthcruiser . When i bought my Z last year the door jamb plate was removed and I had the same question . RBtaylor answered back to check the seatbelts if they are still original as they have info inked into them on a little white tag as to date of manufacture . After a little cross-ref with my vin and some help from this board , my car was built in feb 71 .This is a great board that I'm sure you will enjoy .see ya Chris Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29047-newbie/#findComment-256550 Share on other sites

Yes, it looks like someone accidentally sorted only the spreadsheet VIN column leaving the other data in place. Unfortunately there's no revision history to allow undoing changes like that. Fortunately I had downloaded a copy of the spreadsheet a few weeks ago and was able to manually copy and paste VIN numbers back into place. Right now only Diseazd, rv6aflyer and Sailor Bob don't have VIN numbers because their data is more recent than my backup. If anyone else reading this who previously entered data could quickly verify their own info that would be great. And please, be careful out there. August 14, 200816 yr comment_256600 Big Oak - Glad you brought that up (about the spread sheet) - was looking at the VINs and I figured I had something buggered up cause mine (73) was 30,000 out of sync with the others. Anyway it's sorted out now. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29047-newbie/#findComment-256600 Share on other sites
August 14, 200816 yr comment_256607 Thanks for checking. After doing the manual work to fix the problem I looked again and noticed that there is a complete revision history and the ability to roll back changes so hopefully people won't have to worry about having to re-key everything. Anyway it's sorted out now. I was in worse shape... I wasn't sure if I'd listed the 240Z... so I scan down to 40050 to see it next to 1972ZDave's 72 Z... as already documented, I got her off ebay from a seller who was less than perfectly truthful about her state... a couple of other details... i. the VIN # on the Michigan registration had a mistake in it (HLS30040050; they replaced the space with a 0)... ii. my data plate is missing on the door jamb... All of a sudden, oh crap...my car might be stolen...(this would be difficult as it had to pass export controls at the US border and import control on the Canadian side)...but...oh...crap... Then I look up a few names and see Bigoak...back to my normal state of general confusion....
