Posted August 18, 200816 yr comment_257045 I have a 1975 280z. There is a black wire that is attached to the base of the AFM but is not connected to anything. I think this is supposed to ground the AFM??. Should it? Where should this connect to? August 18, 200816 yr Author comment_257052 On my 75 its grounded to the base where the AFM sits on.Thanks, but I think you misunderstood my question.I agree.. It should be grounded.,, however, where should the wire that is connected to the base come from.Right now there is just a wire hanging from the base of the AFM and I don't know what connects to it.?sorry if I am confusing Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29092-where-does-this-wire-go-from-the-afm/#findComment-257052 Share on other sites
August 18, 200816 yr comment_257054 It connects under one of the 10 mm bolts on the afm mount, the one closest to the bottom of the coil, if that makes sense. August 18, 200816 yr comment_257071 If I follow you, there isn't a wire that connects to it. It's a frame ground. It should run from the AFM to the inboard rear bolt on the AFM mount bracket. There should be a full loop terminal end on the wire. Make sure the wire terminal end and the area around the bolt are clean. The bolts are installed from underneath the AFM mount bracket. I do not see a wire FROM the AFM at all.. only there is that wire that is attached to the AFM mount bracket.Where should the wire FROM the AFM originate? Maybe that would answer my question.. I appreciate you guys trying to help. August 18, 200816 yr comment_257074 If it is the same as on my ZX, which is should be, here is how it works. One connector is attached topside, the other underneath. The green dashed line represents under, the green circle is where it attaches. My hand is holding the slack from underneath. Hope this helps (photos usually do). August 19, 200816 yr comment_257092 There is no wire 'from the AFM' other than the plug from the harness. The wire you're talking about is the ground. The AFM gets it's ground from being bolted to the bracket and the wire is just an extra ground. The one end of that wire you can see where it bolts, the other end is bolted on the bottom of the bracket under the bolt that under the back of the AFM where the front of the rubber duct meet it, like David's photo shows. It's purpose, who knows? I've run cars without that wire and have seen no change in performance, mileage, anything so if you're looking to solve a problem by hooking it up, I'm doubting that will happen. Steve's right as usual. That wire gets sandwiched between the inboard mount bolt shock bushing and the AFM case.
