August 23, 200816 yr comment_257726 Don't forget the 810 (though most have). L24 engine, independent suspension, sporty flair - what's not to like? Having owned a 280Z, a 240Z, a Nissan Truck, and a 2000 Maxima SE, I would have killed to have an 810 with a manual tranny and a built L-series engine.I envisioned something similar to Diseazd's 510 - what a site that would be!! August 23, 200816 yr comment_257730 I've waffled back and forth about building the engine in my 810 since it's a daily driver. I decided to leave it stock. I can run 87 octane, get 25+ mpg, and go anywhere in it in air conditioned comfort......well as much comfort as a vehicle designed 30+ years ago will give. August 23, 200816 yr comment_257746 As I recall, 810 was the model number. The base model got only the model number, and the "Maxima" was an upgraded trim package, that included A/T on the 77/79's.As I recall the 80's Maxima was V6 with Front Wheel Drive.. actually much better styling. However the Toyota Cressida with an in-line six and far better build quality was the market leader in that class from 81 forward, although the class was small. They were both relatively expensive for a Japanese import and Datsun/Toyota buyers were not for the most part looking for high prices. One of the managers I worked with had a 82 Cressida - very impressive car at the time. If I could find a low mileage example - I'd buy one today.FWIW,Carl B. August 23, 200816 yr comment_257748 The 77-79 was never called 'Maxima'. The A/T was always available on them reagardless of trim level. In the 1980 model year the 910 debuted but was badged as an 810 and continued through the 84 model year. I believe the Maxima name went on it in 81. It was RWD. The FWD V6 Maxima didn't appear until 1985. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29133-other-datsuns/?&page=2#findComment-257748 Share on other sites
