Ok, so I just want to replace all of the wiring. Where the heck do they sell harnesses? That seems to be like the only time that is not reproduced!

I was happy to find one on ebay, only to find out that it is for a 1973, which I am sure that it will not work on a 1971. Correct? Or am I to be mistaken!?

No, you are right. a '73 harness is much different than your '71. In fact, it is much worse than you know. There were several different harnesses for '71s alone, depending on when the car was built, and whether it had an automatic. I documented 6 different dash harnesses for '71s, and I think 4 different engine compartment harnesses. You'll need to determine what harnesses will work for you before you start hunting.

That's been discussed before. Problem is that there are too many different variations to build. Probably impossible to make money on it.

What about using one of those 'universal' wiring harnesses I see on Ebay and other car sites every now and then? I know it a pain in the a$$ to make the stock connectors fit with them, but wouldnt it be a matter of spending some time either splicing the Z harness connectors to the universal harness, or just splicing the off harness parts to the universal harness?

Be warned, I've talked to him about this. He has what it takes to restore an existing harness, but his work is VERY expensive. And if the existing harness needs extensive repair, the price for each sub-harness (dash, engine and body) is far more than a parts 240Z with a decent wiring harness normally goes for.

$70 an hour for rebuilding the harness, sometimes he has completed harnesses for sale. I know he is expensive. It is just an option.

He has completed, refurbished engine harnesses for sale for $500 or so on Ebay. Unless your car is going to be a Concours restoration, I would just rewire the car yourself using a Painless or EZwire universal kit. That way you can determine the power splices, the ground locations, etc.

Umm..why do you want to replace it? What doesn't work? Is it just aesthetics, grimy tape etc? It took me a few days last winter to remove all the tape, clean adhesive from the wires, check wire continuity/resistance, de-corrode all connections (De-Oxit rocks), solder/heat shrink all splice points and rewrap (Eastwood sells great wire harness tape). I even made my own replica engine ID tag...

Vendors sell the correct connectors/plugs for replacement, or you can buy some "junk harnesses" off EBay and scavenge parts from them (that's what I did)

Why not put some elbow grease into restoring what you've got instead of throwing money at it?
