This thread is to help you figure out your plans to come to Amelia Island over the weekend of March 13-15, 2009. The Car Show will be held on that Sunday, and the initial point of this thread is to address what to do with all of the significant others that come with you with short automotive attention span, and to give current and historic details about the show.

My family and I drive down twice a year to visit "The Jacksonville Zoo" it is a great place for Kids and adults, and is stroller(renals available on-site) friendly! There is a stroller friendly train(with a tour guide to point out highlights) that circles the park all day long, and you can ride as often and long as you want.

There are tons of animals, you can pay to feed Zebras, stingrays (reasonable, but sometimes a long line), and the animals in a kiddy petting zoo. The staff makes a presentation out of feeding several large Aligators ,and the sharks! Everywhere you or your children can feed/pet animals there is a large handwashing station!

Children have several areas that can go and just play!

Gerbil maze-just what it sounds like a giant series of plastic tunnels for the kids to run through-and believe me they do!

In the Play area of the park:

There is a Splash Ground-be sure to bring a bathing suit for the Kids! "Swimmies" can be bought on site.

There is a Tree House(seriously up in the air) playground with rope/net bridges, two story slides, and lots of "secret areas" to explore.

A Garden Maze-just for kids-they go in one area and meet you at the other end.

All of the Childrens areas are set up so an adult can participate as well-and it is fun to get in with them!

We spend 5 to 7 hours at the Zoo each time we go-and usually don't see it all-the boys get tired. There are several places to eat within the park, ranging from outdoor stands to fast food type dining-eat early-the lines get looooong for the climate controlled restaurants-in March that should not be an issue, it will not be hot-nor will it be cold(maybe in the early morning hours).

We have taken children from 6 months old to 14 years old, and all of them have had a great time. If you have kids in your mix, this is the best, longest, and most memorable(make sure you have a change of clothes for the splash area) venue that we have taken our boys to in the Jacksonville area.

PS I forgot to mention the Zoo is on Heckscher Road-a road that goes all the way to Amelia Island. Three turns and you are there-Granted it is a good stretch of road(around 30 miles) between , but...turn left out of the Ritz Carleton, turn left on to Heckscher-go about 30 miles(well signed-even though you will think you are lost) and turn left onto Zoo Parkway, and you are at the Zoo!

And Now for something completely different!

If you like the beach or camping. or both, you are in the center of more coastal parks than you can shake a stick at! The Temperature averages 73 during the day.

Peek at the addresses-all seriously close by, all but one right down the street!

My family camps out at Huguenot at least once a year. They have RV and tent sites(with fire rings), restrooms inside and outside showers(inside access limited to registered guests). Legal beach driving, an on site store, an on site cafe/bistro, and there is a ferry($8) to cross the St. Johns a mile or so down the road for quicker access to Jacksonville than driving down Hecksher alone will allow!

I have a long list of other family things to do in the Jax area, most are of the playground/arcade/inflatable(not your kind of inflatable toy there E!)rides type thing, I am getting the web links set up too so they can be completely checked out. I will list the places I have been first and give my thoughts of them, those that I haven't been to, you'll know as much about as I do.

My thought was that those of us that will go to See Carl could get together for Friday night/Saturday for something before the Amelia Island show on Sunday. Whether it is renting a pavillion at one of the ocean front parks for a Saturday drive up Z show/swap meet, or just hunting down the closest Hooters(Restautant there guys!)! What kind of thing would you guys be up for?

Once again,

We will be holding an impromptu Z get together on Saturday, March 14th, at Pavillion #5 at the North Beach of Little Talbot State Park, if you are going to be in the area, plan to join us, the pavillion is reserved for us from sunrise to sunset., There is a nominal charge to enter the state park.

Lunch CruiZ details

The restaurant I have chosen is one I have been enjoying for over a decade, almost every time I visit Jacksonville, (since the Mash Unit restraunt (Dressed up as the 8063rd if memory serves) closed years ago), and have never been disapointed with.

Any CruiZ should have a decent drive, and this restaurant is 50 minutes(39 miles) from the park! There is also an optional route that will allow your Z to be carried carried across the St. Johns by a boat($8) instead of a bridge!!

ALso,

There is a ton of Construction going on on I95 between Savannah and Fernandina beach, the speed linit for most of that distance has dropped and been posted at 55. Serious enforcement hiding in the median on every curve and behind all obstructions. If you are using I95 south add some time for the construction, or a ticket!
