IGNORED

only runs with key turned

I just put new points/condenser on my 72 240z, and now it has a funny problem. When I turn it over, it will fire up like it should, but dies immediately after I let go of the key. It seems to run fine at 1000-2000 rpm when the starter is turning, but I havn't held it for long because I don't want to ruin my starter. It's acting like it's not getting spark. My only hunch is that the ignition switch is faulty, but have never heard of one causing a problem like this. Also, I noticed that my radio and brake light stay on no matter where my key is turned (even if I take it out). This is also a new problem.

Sounds like the ballast resistor. It's that white ceramic thing about the size of a Mars bar located beside the coil. Either you've detached a wire or its burnt out. Check the connections between it and the dizzy. Easy fix either way.

I have a 1983 280zx (non turbo) and my rear lights (I believe this includes my brake lights also) will not turn off unless I disconnect the battery. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

Are you sure it's not just your brake lights? If so, either the stopper on the pedal is broken, the brake like switch is bad or out of adjustment.

If your actual taillights stay on then you have a short in the light switch.

2tone: Check the wiring at the distributor and ballast resistor. You've inverted one of the black/white wires. That's why you're not getting power on "Run", but yes on "Start".

Not sure on the other, unless you also recently installed a radio and tapped into the positive side of the brake circuitry.... don't do that.
