air conditioning pump problems

Recommended Posts

well when i got the z the ac pump belt was completely destroyed.. a big chunk of the rubber was missing, and it just practically fell off when i touched it. today i got a new belt and put it on, ran fine, etc, but when i switched the ac on the engine's rpm went way down and i saw some smoke coming from the air conditioning pump. i think it was the clutch burning up? because the pump itself wasnt moving at all. but the bearing thing that the belt is connected to was spinning.. i know i had the right tension and everything. but something is frozen in the pump i guess.. how can i fix this?? thanks

Sounds like either the clutch is shot or the whole copressor. It may have been used with not enough oil in the system and the bearings in the compressor are shot. You should have a good A/C mechanic or shop take a look at it to be sure. You could try to turn it by hand after removing the belt, just to see if the compressor is turning freely or not.

You can purchase just a compressor from MSA if you cannot find one locally. They have a much better rotary compressor to replace it with and it will work much better than the old style compressor and be much more efficient.

Mine landed in the trash the first week I had the car... Air conditioning just slows the car down... I would rather sweat than carry the extra weight. If you are going to restore the cold air, you might look at some hot rod sites. There are some very nice after market units available that ... take up less room under the hood, and inside the car. Run the new type of refrigerant, and steal less power from your engine. My brother is a rodder, and he just bought one. It cost him about $900.00, but it's new and works great.
