L28 Stroker project

Jim, I would love to know your setup if you are pushing 400 hp out of a stock L28ET. Fueling is an issue with the stock EFI and it usually craps out around 300 hp. I am not trying to start a pissing match, but am curious what you did to get to 400 hp out of a stock L28ET and stock EFI.

For reference, I am producing 400+ ft-lbs of torque at the wheels, but I am using 503 cc/min injectors, base fuel pressure is 53 psi, and I am using an aftermarket EMS. My AFRs are tuned for 12:1 at 22 psi on a T03/04E 50 trim turbo. I am also using methanol injection (FJO Racing 700 cc/min injector) controlled by my EMS.

Josh,

I am in the midst of a stroker build myself. They are much more time, labor and $ intensive than anyone would lead you to believe. Other than the cool factor, the turbo is really the way to go. Besides, if you get a stock 2.8L turbo, you can upgrade as time and money allow.

Just as a reference point, I'm building a 3.0L stroker with a race head and big cams. I had to have custom machining done to the block to clear the increased stroke and have the pistons cut to prevent interferance with the valves. I have also had to tweak many small clearance issues and fitting here and there. Since you indicated you're not really mechanically inclined, I would assume you will have someone build the engine for you. In that case, go with a reputable shop that has experience with the Nissan/Datsun engine. Having the wrong shop build this custom of a motor is not a good idea.

I would bet that for the $6K you want to spend you can get a rebuilt turbo motor that will run solid and still have some coin left over for additional mods like exhaust, intake, fuel system. Don't forget, you will need to up grade additional system to handle the increased power like your drive line, cooling, ignition and fuel pump just to name a few.

This is just my two cents, but do your home work before jumping into something like this. If you still want to do it, great. Nothing sounds cooler than a big NA L6 camming like a big dog.

Chris.

When you think about a stroker motor, forget HP. The beauty is in the torque not the HP...

Easiest way to 300+ HP is a turbo or a supercharger. I don't think anyone is making a supercharger kit for a 30 year old car right now (unless they are crazy) so turbocharging is your best bet... I am currently building a twin turbo typeIV 4 cylinder for a 914 race car that will be 300-400HP depending on boost and have no lag due to the sequential sizes of the turbo's and water to air intercooler.

If you do build a turbo - make sure you have great brakes.

Actually, I do know of a guy who is custom fabbing a supercharger setup for the L-series engines, with an eye towards marketing a kit when he's done. He's not ready to share details yet, so that's all I'll say right now.

It's not from this guy is it?

Please let us know more about that 'kit' as soon as you can!!! :bunny:

I'm no expert, but am with Conedodger on this one. I went with the Rebello 2.7 L upgrade not because I wanted more HP, but for the torque.

More torque is better for low speed / street driving, and makes an S30 nicer to drive. I drove a friend's stroked Z years ago when I had my stock 240 and the difference was significant.

High HP provides more performance at freeway speeds and on the track. If you plan to autocross, my guess is that higher torque will buy you more than the added HP...

How about adding a turbo to a stroked engine... Now that would be Fun!

Just my 2 cents.
