Posted September 22, 200816 yr comment_261305 I want to ax the complete smog system on my 1972 240 (california car). Are there any articles, etc. on doing this? Are there any components that I should absolutely leave or do I just take it off and plug the holes? Any direction is appreciated. Thanks. September 22, 200816 yr comment_261313 You need to leave the PCV fitting in the center of the balance tube and the tap for the brake booster hose. Everything else can go away.... Except the linkage to the carbs of course. We supply a couple of iterations of the cleaned up balance tube if you're interested in taking a look.www.ztherapy.com Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29453-want-to-get-rid-of-emmission-control-system/#findComment-261313 Share on other sites
September 22, 200816 yr Author comment_261323 Thanks. The balance tube you offer looks clean. Do I have to worry about smog testing when I sell the car? I think I read somewhere that 1975 and older cars do not need smog tests. Is that your understanding? September 22, 200816 yr comment_261325 That varies from state to state. Where do you live? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29453-want-to-get-rid-of-emmission-control-system/#findComment-261325 Share on other sites

September 23, 200816 yr comment_261335 I'm in Los Angeles, CA.Then your 'home free'. California's smog program only applies to 76 and newer vehicles. You don't have to smog it for a transfer unless it's in that catagory. September 23, 200816 yr comment_261340 What's you goal or reason for removing the emmissions equipment? You should probably consider that your engine might run worse without those parts. September 23, 200816 yr comment_261349 What's you goal or reason for removing the emmissions equipment? You should probably consider that your engine might run worse without those parts. Otherwise, you'll need to figure out how to retune the engine properly with the parts off.FFT... This is exactly my question too...precisely what do I need to do to remove my smog gear on a 2/71? All that useless weight, with a frozen air pump and a dirty, rusty, "holey" balance tube... for what? How will removing all that junk affect my tuning- which is almost flawless now? I'd love to get one of ZTherapy's tubes, but I don't want to throw my Z into a tizzy randomly pulling "stuff" off. September 23, 200816 yr comment_261355 Unless you leave a hole open for a leak I doubt you'll notice any difference. This is one of those things that has been done thousands of times with no ill effects. Any "run quality" issues can be addressed by dialing in the carbs. The condiition of ones carbs? That's another issue............. September 23, 200816 yr comment_261357 I have one of the Ztherapy balance tubes on my '70. Runs great and looks really clean, glad I installed it, took some of the varibles away when it came time to tune... fewer varibles increases your chance of successl and less headaches down the road.Best regards, Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29453-want-to-get-rid-of-emmission-control-system/#findComment-261357 Share on other sites
