the_cafe Posted September 29, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 29, 2008 while i was driving today my zed got really noisy all of a sudden. i knew it had to be the muffler since it was really old and indeed it was. when it got it back to my pad i cut the muffler off and it sounds really nice. it sounds like a race car:love:. before i keep driving it this way is it going to hurt the motor by doing this? i was told it might need more back pressure and i dont want to burn a valve up so is it alright if i keep driving it this way?:devious:
d240zx2 Posted September 29, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 29, 2008 You're not going to have any problem, with the possible exception of the gendarmes. A straight-piped Z is a delicious thing to hear, isn't it?Frank

beandip Posted September 29, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 29, 2008 As much as I like the sound of a Z engine under power. I am so glad you don't live in my area.
the_cafe Posted September 29, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted September 29, 2008 could i even cut the exhaust off near or at the end of the manifold to save weight? i wouldnt think it would sound much different then it does now.
Oiluj Posted September 29, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 29, 2008 I echo Beandip's comment. I'm glad you don't live near me with an un-muffled engine. An un-muffled engine is fine at the track, but not on the street. Having a decent muffler is not only a courtesy to others, almost everywhere it's a legal requirement.Just my 2 cents...

Turbo7MN Posted September 29, 2008 Share #8 Posted September 29, 2008 could i even cut the exhaust off near or at the end of the manifold to save weight? i wouldnt think it would sound much different then it does now.I wouldn't do that... I dunno, different cars respond differently to this and I've not heard a Z running straight off the manifold so I cannot comment on that. Piping does quiet it down, or at least change the sound though. In my experience, just hacking the mufflers off a car creates an unpleasant droning in the cabin. What you'll want to try is welding a piece of aluminized piping in place of where the muffler was and put a tip on it. That way it still looks like the car has an exhaust system and I guarantee it will sound better from inside the car. A lot of Mark VIII guys do that and it ends up sounding really nice. Totally different engine I know... but do consider it.On the other hand, my friends crown vic sounded great without mufflers but the piping still killed the sound a little bit, so we hacked off another big section of piping and dumped it under the car and it sounded amazing without even making it noticeably louder. But again we ran into the problem of droning inside the car.I really think a small section of pipe and a tip will be your best option here overall if you really like that sound. I wouldn't be extremely worried about getting pulled over or anything, here in MN I never had any issues when I was driving my excessively loud RX-7. Just drive a little more gentle in town and in neighborhoods and you should do alright.-Darren

Sailor Bob Posted September 29, 2008 Share #10 Posted September 29, 2008 I think you need your head examined! The other point is Carbon monoxide - your cabin will fill with the deadly gas and you will not even know what happened - you'll be gone for the dirt nap. sblake01 Posted September 29, 2008 Share #11 Posted September 29, 2008 Final comment ever from me on the_cafe:Since this guy has earned a spot on my ignore list, I can't see what he's saying, except when you quoute him, and I don't really care to. However, based on the responses, nothing has changed and I still don't understand why he get's indulged on this site. Rock on, Dude!!
WingZr0 Posted September 29, 2008 Share #12 Posted September 29, 2008 (edited) i unbolted the exhaust at the manifold for to hear what it sounded like. it was louder and shot flames!:cheeky: when i revved it to 6k my neighbor came out all pissed off and said if i tried that again shed call the cops. i wanted to say get used to it but told her id bolt up my pipe again so its a little quiter. OK, just for starters this is my first time seeing this member on the boards. With that being said I sure he's not really going to drive the car as Sblake01 thinks for the reasons he obviously mentioned but just wanted to at least see what it sounds like out of curiousty, and I have to say I would of tried it too but know already not to actually drive that way for "Dirt Nap" reasons . But I calld my cousin over to read this thread and gave him a breif run down on the exhuast premence of this thread and when he got to the part qouted above we both loughed LOL Now at least try and run a side pipe like a 66 Corvette or simliar era. Thrush made a good set of those in the 60's and can be found on EBAY for a reassonable price and may even have the nice Race Car sound you love. I'm not all that much of an expert on Thrush as much as I'm am ANSA but I would imagine the Thrush side pipe would be unique and different As long as he wasn't serious bout CO2 doozing, go easy on him Blake ~Z~ Edited September 29, 2008 by WingZr0
