Valves, EGR, Servo's....Do I need them

OK,

Thanks to many of you on here I got the carbs, intake, hoses, etc all back on the 240 but do not have these items installed.

Non-return valve

Throttle opener control

Servo diaphram

Solenoid valve

EGR control valve

Flame trap

The car will start and run but then eventually dies. I have searched alot of engine pictures and some don't have most of these items on. What if any of the above need to be installed, or if all above is left off is that ok?

Sorry for all the questions lately, but it is a great learning experience for me. Wish I would have taken those auto classes 25 years ago in high school.

Thanks Bruce,

I wished I could zoom that picture in some more, but it does help. If you don't mind a complete newb question.........:nervous: where is the pcv valve located? I checked my manual with no avail. Here is a current picture of the engine I've been working on, would you or another member please point out what needs to be addressed...also where that dang pcv is?

Also in picture 2 are these black hoses needed, there was also a plug in wire that I don't think is needed...any thoughts.

Many thanks,

Randy (The mechanic.....NOT!)

PCV is the big nipple that points out and downwards in the middle between the carbs. It should have a hose that goes down to the pipe that sticks out of the side of the block below the distributor.

Edit: I don't have a clean picture of my yellow car after I got it done, but here's a notated picture from the red car.

A couple of things on yours would be cleaner with the correct air cleaner box. Plus the carbs work better with the factory air box with air horns - something to consider.

Johnny and Arne,

Thanks for the input and the pictures. Johnny, I did buy a filter but the end was way too big, where did you get yours?

PS, Arne I do have the original air cleaner, I just havent attached anything yet due to the occassional starter fluid squirt.

Randy,

Is the vacuum port for distributor vac advance plugged? If not, it Might cause a vacuum leak and poor running...Your vac advance on the distributor is disconnected, that may cause probs down the line.

The other emissions stuff can come off as mentioned earlier, just plug all the ports so it doesn't leak. PCV valves can be ordered from Rock Auto, MSA, BD etc. The hoses can be bought on Ebay, MSA and others...

The two black hoses come from the evap emissions system along the driver's framerail. One hose (the lower of two exiting the valve on the driver's inner fender) goes to the crankcase, the other goes to the air cleaner. If they vent to atmosphere you'll be fine, but I would incorporate the crankcase port into a filter arrangement to keep dirt and debris from getting into the block. I reconnected mine.

PS...Is that an N36 intake? I don't remember those small holes along the top of the E36 and E88 intakes, but they were present on the N36 I installed on my F54/P79. I closed those with some JB Weld, thinking they could be a source of leakage.
