Posted October 3, 200816 yr comment_262368 I have a 1975 280z. I purchased a new Fuel Pump (Airtex Products - Master Parts). Does any one know where I can get a strainer for this part? The old strainer is a little bit to large for the new one (plus I tore it a little bit trying to get it out anyway) and I can not find the strainer at Autozone or O'Reilly (they both sell the pump but it does not come with a strainer) The part number on the pump is E8312. Otherwise can anyone recommend a different fuel pump at a reasonable price(one that comes with a strainer) for my Z (and where can I get it) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29567-new-fuel-pump-need-strainer/ Share on other sites
October 3, 200816 yr comment_262370 Two things: I guess you'd check with the store you bought the pump from and read this comment from a previous thread about that fuel pump:http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showpost.php?p=267808&postcount=8 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29567-new-fuel-pump-need-strainer/#findComment-262370 Share on other sites
October 5, 200816 yr Author comment_262437 The stores don't sell the strainer and can't order it. Can anyone recommend a reliable pump that isn't going to break me. I don't particularly like skimping on parts but I am working on a tight budget here. October 5, 200816 yr comment_262447 Also posted in the other thread:By the way, the parts store will not honor the 1 year warranty unless you have the protective screen on the input end of the pump; they didn't bother telling me about this part when I bought it, and there is no such part for sale or included with the pump. Bit of a catch 22.I also ran into that problem with Autozone but I'm persistinent enough (believe me when I say that!) to get a refund. I had three of these pumps fail in less than a year, as I said, one on one of my cars and two others that I installed on other peoples cars. No mention of the screen was made at the time of purchase; only when attempting to return the defective pump. I don't know what to tell you other than steer clear of that pump. October 5, 200816 yr Author comment_262457 I get it. Its a bad pump. I came to the same conclusion that zbane did when I realized that the pumps didn't come with a strainer and the stores couldn't order them. (and I couldn't find a strainer on line anywhere either)What pump did you decide to go with after you realized the Airtex one was a rip off? October 5, 200816 yr comment_262458 Find an original at a Junkyard, clean it up and use it. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29567-new-fuel-pump-need-strainer/#findComment-262458 Share on other sites
October 15, 200816 yr comment_263367 As an alternative to a strainer, I used a filter. I found two reasonably priced parts that will do the job - both are regular metal body filters, but they have 1/2" inlets and outlets. One's by Mr. Gasket, p/n 2526 and the other is sold by NAPA, p/n 3299. The only difference I can see is the Mr. Gasket is chrome plated. You can get either one for less than $15.00. October 15, 200816 yr comment_263373 The Mr. Gasket filter is designed for carbureators and isn't rated for the fuel pressure that an EFI system puts out. The one from NAPA is likely much the same. October 16, 200816 yr comment_263459 You are correct, sir. But I'm using it between the tank outlet and pump inlet to prevent junk from getting TO the pump. It's not seeing any pressure at all.
