jmark Posted September 22, 2009 Author Share #50 Posted September 22, 2009 Update from Greg email:Qualifying Session 1.We just completed our first qualifying session, probably the fastest chance at this track of the three sessions we’ll have. The morning air density, track temperature, and other factors make the track quickest early. We went .7 secs faster than our previous fastest lap and currently are in position 3 (P3) on the grid. We were beat by two multi time National Champions, one a local guy and one last years National Champion. I am .1 secs behind Prather in P2. Remember this is a 4 mile track with 14 turns, and I am 1/10th if a second behind. Seems easy to make it up. I had two drafts on backmarker cars to obtain the 2:30.4 I turned. We will try to better this though but the chances are not that great unless it stays cool into the afternoon. We got busted by the sound guys for exceeding the sound level but they’re going to let my times stand as long as we fix it. We are using a different header and tail pipe assembly that has changed the exhaust note slightly. It’s Prather I am most worried about. At the pace we expect to run, he’s going to be the one to beat. The other super fast guy, John Brakke, doesn’t seem as good at maintaining a fast pace.See you soon.Greg
preith Posted September 22, 2009 Share #51 Posted September 22, 2009 Thanks for the update. Great news, .1 seconds is a huge improvement over 3 at the Sprints. Interesting note about his competitors, I would've thought Brakke was the guy to beat. TexasRider260Z Posted September 23, 2009 Share #52 Posted September 23, 2009 Thank you for that guys. Wow the Mazdas are a frieght train in this class. Way to go Greg. You never know what you see - noise monitoring at a closed circuit race no less.
jmark Posted September 23, 2009 Author Share #53 Posted September 23, 2009 For Greg's second time to the track he is doing extremely well. If they can get the car to run quick the whole race he has a great chance. As always tire choice will be key. They went Cherry Bomb muffler shopping yesterday! They found the parts needed. EP240Z Posted September 26, 2009 Share #60 Posted September 26, 2009 Go get them Greg I hope the weather cooperates. With the moderated field and speeds getting around the back markers may be very interesting this year (as seen in FP race) fastest dont always win the race. Not having any experience it would appear with a track this long and the speeds involved there could be a lot of action esp if the weather get involved.
