Posted October 7, 200816 yr comment_262635 Ok...I spent some time looking through the archives...unable to find a definitive answer. My 71 240 appears to not have the 71 SUs...they are round-tops but the rebuild kits from Black Dragon Auto Parts for the 71 didn't fit...I now live in Guam so everything has to be ordered through the internet...if the SUs are not 71s and they are indeed round-tops...does that automatically mean they are 72s...I need to order more parts but wanted to ping the experts...the car is in the shop so don't have any photos to show if they are 4 screws or 3 screws but will look tomorrow when I get a chance to swing by shop...your advice is appreciated...Thanks Tony Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29601-another-dumb-questionare-they-71s-or-72s/ Share on other sites
October 7, 200816 yr comment_262636 Hi Tony:What is the VIN on your car? What is the Date of Manufacture?Cars manufactured in either 1969, 1970 or 1971 could be titled/registeredas "1971 Model Year" vehicles. What are known as the "round top" S.U.'s were used on 1970 through 1972 Model Year Datsun 240-Z's. So when you order parts you need to know the Date of Manufacture of your car.FWIW,Carl B. October 7, 200816 yr comment_262641 Do your carbs have 3 or 4 screws holding to domes on? What of the kits you bought from Black Dragon didn't fit/work? October 8, 200816 yr comment_262686 Should have bought your SU kit from Ztherapy.... I lived on Guam for 8 years in the 90s so I know what you are talking about. Don't let anyone there touch your car. October 9, 200816 yr Author comment_262835 Was finally able to get to the shop and take a look, they had four screws holding the domes...On the questions about the VIN and manufacture date, the VIN is HLS3018078 the manufacture date is 12/70...I spoke to the guy that is working to repair the carbs he explained that the gaskets, and the replacement valve (?) did not fit...while he is not a Z guru, he is recognized by many as knowing what he is doing with carbs... Also , please keep in mind that I purchased the car from a guy about 1 1/2 yrs ago and have found many instances were short cuts were taken to making repairs...i.e. the horn was wired with speaker wire and was ran through a door bell switch on the center console (yes the almost ir-replaceable center console) via a 2" x 2" hole he cut in the plastic in front of the ashtray...and may other hacks...I am glad I got the car but have been finding many little issues since then... Any help is appreciated... Thanks Tony Broken Orange '71 240 in Guam..... October 9, 200816 yr comment_262848 I would guess that you received 3 screw gaskets to the manifold which will work but aren't the best way to go.The "valve" issue, I assume, refers to the needle and seat. Back in the day there were two diferent available but today there is only one and you bend the float tang to compensate for the different lengths. October 11, 200816 yr Author comment_263018 Ok some more questions for you...on my car the float body comes off the left side on both the front and rear carbs...I looked at the spotter images on ztherapy and they show the float body on the left side of the front carb and on the right side for the rear carb...I will try to post photos but they are rather large so ...Thanks Tony Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29601-another-dumb-questionare-they-71s-or-72s/#findComment-263018 Share on other sites

October 11, 200816 yr comment_263023 Datsun roadster carbs have the floats on the left side but those don't look like roadster carbs. Maybe they're British SUs but they don't appear to be 240Z carbs. October 11, 200816 yr comment_263031 Tony, That is definitely NOT a Zcar Hitachi carb. That's some iteration of an SU SU, H, HD, etc. but not even an HS series which would be the parallel series to the Hitachi used on the Datsuns. That would make it really easy to tell why your rebuild kits weren't worth smack. October 11, 200816 yr comment_263034 Looks like you need a new set of carbs. All your problems are now easy to see. Get a set the right SUs sent them to Ztherapy to be rebuild, intall them in your car and you will be very happy...price should be not concern here because a proper working carb set it a value at any price. Stay away from the night life in Tumon, Club USA, the Viking Tavern, etc... for a weekend or two and you will have enough money to get the new carbs.
