Posted October 7, 200816 yr comment_262659 Quick question:I need a new air flow meter for a '78 280z.Does anybody know whether an AFM from a pre-'78 280z will work in a '78? Nissan shows a different part no. for the AFM for 280's after 8/77, which indicates that it will not. It is of course NLA from Nissan so used or reman are the only remaining options. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks! October 7, 200816 yr comment_262666 I don't recall everything I once knew about the AFM's but IIRC some have a shut-off for the fuel pump built in while others don't. Again, IIRC the '75-'76 will work for those years while the '77-'78 will work for those years. The rebuilder used by Motorsports Auto is Brett Industries in Orange California. They have rebuilt them for me when I contacted directly at a very good price. You could send it to them... Google them. October 7, 200816 yr comment_262668 The 78 was the first one to not have fuel pump contacts in it. However the earlier (75-77) AFM will work in a 78 because, while they would have the contacts, the 78 harness doesn't have the pins for them so it would have no effect on the car's operation since it's fuel pump doesn't use those contacts as part of it's circuitry. October 8, 200816 yr comment_262687 Something strange there. It appears to me that only the first picture is an S30/S130 type AFM. According to the description, all they are offering is a remanufactured stock AFM. No 'digital guts'. Note that the first box says 'Air Flow Meter' and the other says 'Air Mass Sensor'. The other three pictures are of some other hotwire type MAFS and not the one in the description.Product DescriptionThis Python Injection Airflow/Mass Air Flow unit is an exact replacement for your vehicle's original unit. Every unit is remanufactured to the precise specifications of the vehicle's original unit. Every unit goes through thorough testing after the remanufacturing process to insure that it is performing correctly. Python has been an automotive industry leader in providing high quality, inexpensive remanufactured fuel injection components since 1992. October 8, 200816 yr comment_262698 Just a follow up as to why I was skeptical which made me examine that Python ad. The use of a hotwire type MAFS requires a mcrocomputer type control unit and all the attending circuitry as opposed to the 'circuit board in a box' that the S30/S130 has. October 8, 200816 yr comment_262706 No apology necessary. The ad is somewhat unclear. I looked at some of Python's other stuff, like their fuel pumps, and those ads don't have representative photos either. Their products are likely just fine but their advertising needs some work.
