260Z optical distributor and XR3000

Hi guys,

I am trying to get back to work on my Z. It has been sitting dormant way to long. Here is my issue though:

I am trying to get my XR3000 and coil hooked up and running. I have the 260Z distributor which is as far as I know the stock one. This is an electronic distributor and looking at the diagram hookups I have found around the forums it always shows three wires coming out of the distributor and then going into a molex connector before the XR3000.

The problem is that my dizzy only has two wires coming out of it, not three. That is the part that is throwing me off. I can get a picture tonight if it helps but I was curious if any other 260 owners have found an answer.

Thanks

The optical assembly that goes in the distributor has 3 wires and a molex, did you instal that into the dizzy?

I too have a 260Z with the XR3000 set-up. Everything is labeled. The red, Yellow and black go to the coil..... Red to (+) on the coil. Yellow to the (-) on the coil and the black gets grounded. Then the black, white and grey wires on a molex go to the dizzy, the optical insert goes in the dizzy in place of the points. Then connect the dizzy to the molex.

I guess that's the part I am thrown by. I see two wires coming out of the distributor. These are the only two I see. That's why connecting them to the molex it looks like I am one short. I will double check tonight and try to get a picture to make sure that I am looking at it right. Do all three of your wires come pretty much from the same location, out the upper side of the distributor?

Do you have this peice in your Dizzy? If you do, and it only has 2 wires, then something is seriously wrong or you got robbed. The picture shows the optical set-up inside a converted dizzy.

Take a picture of the inside of your dizzy and the rest of your set-up,

Dave.

That looks like an electronic ignition but difinately not an XR3000 set-up.

Where did you get the xr3000? was it new in the box, get it from a friend, what? As far as I know, the XR 3000 is a complete kit that comes with the Fireball coil, ignition box (w/connectors, labels and directions) and 1 Optical insert that replaces your current (points or electronic) set-up.

I think you're missing something.

I will look through my crap. It has been maybe a year since I had first opened the box. Maybe I set something aside and forgot about it. It must be in my containers someplace. At least now I know why I was having a tough time when I was looking at other peoples wiring diagrams. I will search the garage tonight.

Okay, I found the box and more hardware:

So now I am trying to figure out how to attach this one. I have removed the rotor from the dizzy and unscrewed the old electronic piece in the first pictures.

How do I know which of the disks is the right one for me?

Not that I can help with this straight-on, but for taking close up pictures, switch you camera to macro mode. Its usually the flower shaped icon on the dial or a button itself. It'll make the pictures up close much clearer.

The distributor on your photo shows an inductive magnetic pickup, you can see the reluctor with a protruding nose for each cylinder and the pickup assembly to the right with a black and green cable.

The XR3000 unfortunately only supports optical pickups, so you either need to convert the distributor to the Crane optical pickup as mentioned by Zs-ondabrain, or use a different ignition (Crane Hi-6, MSD6) which supports magnetic pickups. Your later photos both show the optical pickup and the correct optical blade with six slots, so you should have all required parts.

This PDF will explain all steps if you lost the installation leaflet:

In post number 8, he stated that he found the box of needed (missing) parts. Now all he has to do is instal the correct 6 cyl. spacer peice and the optical pick-up and he's good to go.

Maybe he'll chime in soon and give us an update on his progress.

Thanks for your input though, I know I appreciate it.

Dave.
