Posted October 19, 200816 yr comment_263715 I just bought my first engine stand to store/clean/repair the original block from a 1970. I put the stand together and after all was completed it stated engine bolts not included. My question is how do you attach the block to the stand. What size bolts do I need...10mm? Where do they bolt in, how long, etc. I'm sure this is easier than I'm making it. Also if someone has a picture please post one up.Thanks,Randy Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29702-engine-stand-question/ Share on other sites
October 19, 200816 yr comment_263716 Its been a while but I believe they are 12X 1.25 . The engine stand bolts to the block where the trans was bolted up . Take one of those bolts with you and to duplicate the size and thread size. Length is determined by the engine stand mount. Measure the depth on the block . Just don't bottom the bolts into the block. Use HARDENED bolts like #9s Not just a common steel bolt. With a inline block there is a lot of leverage on the bolts. October 19, 200816 yr comment_263718 The thread pitch is 1.25. I can't recall whether they are 12 mm or 10 mm. It's one or the other. 12 sounds correct to me as well. October 19, 200816 yr comment_263728 Mine are 1.5MM.Measure the length of the "barrel" on the stand that the bolt goes thru and add about1/2" to 3/4" for the bolt length. Bring one of your existing bolts to the store to double check your pitch. October 19, 200816 yr comment_263748 If memeory serves me correctly I think if you have a set of old head bolts they work like a charm. You might need to cut a few spacers to take up some slack but I remember doing that in a pinch one late Sat night when all the parts stores were closed. If I am wrong I appologize, i've slept many times since then.Jeff Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29702-engine-stand-question/#findComment-263748 Share on other sites
October 20, 200816 yr comment_263768 They are 10mm. You need at least a metric grade 10.9 (the parts stores call them Grade 8 sometimes because that is the SAE equivalent.) The length depends upon the stand, but the ones I used were 80mm long. Just make sure you have enough spacers...I have used sockets, and cut 1/2" and 1" black pipe with big washers...Will Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29702-engine-stand-question/#findComment-263770 Share on other sites
October 20, 200816 yr comment_263816 I'll third it - I used headbolts with spacers when I rebuilt mine this past winter. Worked great. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29702-engine-stand-question/#findComment-263816 Share on other sites
October 20, 200816 yr Author comment_263839 Thanks for the heads up, I went ahead and got both 10mm and 12mm last weekend. I used spacers with the 10mm but could only attach three of the four arms to the block, do you think that will be ok? I tried various configurations but could only get three to work. Let me know if you would change something. Oh, yea......now that I got it on this stand what am I suppossed to do...:stupid: I think first I'll give it some paint. October 20, 200816 yr comment_263843 Try mounting it like this. 1st pic is overhead view, Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29702-engine-stand-question/#findComment-263843 Share on other sites
October 20, 200816 yr Author comment_263845 The hole in the arm is to far away to mount it that way, I can get it to work if I move one arm to the lower bracket but wasnt sure if you should have two arms in one bracket hole. Does that makes sense? If I could drill an extra hole in the arm I could mount it like yours.Do you think it's ok to use just three arms, or would you move one to the lower bracket.
