Finally getting painted.

The bodyshop is finally painting my Z. I went down to see it and so far just the interior was shot, no clear on it. Im going for the 110RED and I gave him the PPG single stage code for it. He got that mixed then did a color-match for the 2 stage paint.

The pic of the finished Z is from ZHOME's color gallery, so I was kind of using it for reference. I know the color will look different with clear on it, and inside lighting makes it look different. But does that look a bit TOO orangey??

The pic with the battery door in it has clearcoat on the battery door, so I assume thats what the finished product will look like.

In my experience - and confirmed by the wide variations in your pictures - it is VERY difficult for a digital camera to record accurate color rendition in a paint booth. The bland gray/white background contrasting with the vivid new paint plays hell with the white balance. So it is impossible for those of us who have not seen the color in person to judge whether or not it is too orange. To my eyes, your pictures range from very orange to very red (towards the blue end of the spectrum).

When I had mine painted (earlier 905 red), I gave the PPG code, but I also had him tint to match the color on the underside of the toolbox lids to ensure that the color was as close as possible to the original. Like you, I wasn't sure how well that worked when I saw it in the booth. But in natural light outdoors it appears to be correct.

FWIW, the picture of the door jam looks to me to be a decent match to 110. But again, that's just what the computer displays. I have no idea if that's an accurate representation.

It is impossible to tell for sure - given different lighting and color on a computer display vs color in the real world.

Nonetheless, it looks pretty close with the clear coat in place... This picture was taken inside and with the use of a flash... so the radiator support comes out looking a little brighter, or with more orange. You can see in the darker areas how it looks without so much flash back.

Thats all I was looking for. Thanks guys. I just wanted a quick 2nd opinion while theres still time to fix it. 'pretty close' and 'decent match' are good enough with all the variables in the color displayed.

Next week its getting finished then finally I can get her home. Theres that point when it was stripped down to metal and it all looked so far away from getting done where I was thinking about just not bothering finishing it, but Im glad I kept at it all.

You and I are at the same stage. This was taken earlier this week 110 Red......PPG 72000. After I have removed the gray primer, the burgandy paint, I finally found (what I thought was 918.......my body shop mixed up a gallon and I guess they will have a sale on 918 Orange) I'm sure your color is going to look great. My body is getting painted this week and final assembly this week as well. My project started in March '07. Are you putting in a new interior?? I am doing all but the dash (just can't cough it up right now) this project has grown more that I originally thought a year and a half ago. My wife has been very supportive so far but I know my luck is going to run out sooner than later - I havn't sprung the wheels and tires on her yet.

One more question for you. Have you researched grommets yet? I have been in contact with David House at Courtesy Nissan in Texas and here are the Nissan part numbers for the interior grommets if that will help you. I am going to chart them (as I do my install) in my 72 so maybe somebody will put together a kit when people like us are trying to do a restoration. I searched this website and could not find anything on Nissan parts with a cross reference to where they go and how many are needed.

64821-32200 the book calls for 7

I am not replacing my firewall gommets due to not pulling my dash at this point. Hope that helps if you have not researched it yet. It looks like VIN numbers are close:D

ya, im going to have to replace all my grommets. i guess all the little rubber pieces are going to add up fast. The pic you posted of the ppg 72000 110red looks alot more 'red' than mine! This color is odd because it looks different in every light.

Call David at Courtsey Nissan. I am going to be installing mine hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. Let me get mine in and I'll let you know the piece count per item number that you will need. David had to special order a couple of different item numbers for me but they were all accessable.

I believe that is because his picture was taken without a FLASH.. If you look at the picture I Posted.. you will note that where ever the FLASH hit the surface directly - it looks more orange. Where their was no direct FLASH the paint looks closer to red.

If you park a 110 Red Z - beside a real RED car, the 110 looks orange. If you park a 110 Red Z beside an actual orange car - the 110 looks red. At any rate it was a very nice color on the 240-Z's.

Carl, I'm not sure if a flash was used for my pics as the painter took them. But the first pic with the battery door was taken with my iPhone and no flash in the body shop, not in the well lit paint booth. Mine was the original 918 orange, I saw a difference when he opened up the rear storage lids.

I'll post more pics after its painted in some natural light.
