Posted October 26, 200816 yr comment_264486 Hello, I'm new and just got a 1977 Skyline with a L28 N42 head. It seems that they put a L20 oil pan so that it could fit nice and snug on top of the steering rack. Well the problem, is that the dipstick is for the L28, but because the oil pan was changed the dipstick does not go all the way in. When I went to get an oil change, I did not know how much oil I had in the car, so ended up putting a little over 6qrts of oil. Does anyone know how many quarts an L28 takes wit an L20/24 oil pan? October 26, 200816 yr comment_264487 A rear sump L20/L24 takes 5 L or 5 1/4 quarts with filter. So it would seem that you're about a quart over. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29782-l28-engine-oil-capacity/#findComment-264487 Share on other sites
October 27, 200816 yr comment_264528 You don't want the crank to take a swim but you really don't want the oil pickup to ingest air during cornering either. The real question is how far down does the pickup go? Has the pickup been modified? In theory a "calibrated" or correct L28 dipstick when cut to length will tell you if the oil level is too high. This assumes that the stock pickup is being used of course.Sblake is probably right about the 5-1/4 quart amount. Just cut your 280Z dipstick end off enough to check the level.Jim Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/29782-l28-engine-oil-capacity/#findComment-264528 Share on other sites
