I don't think you have to worry about emissions since the car is older than 25. In my 260Z I have all emission stuff removed. However, you have to pass safety inspection. That includes properly functioning brakes, seatbelts, lights, present bumpers, exhaust (muffler, etc). You would have to worry about rust holes that can make the car structurally weak or would allow exhaust fumes (excessive fumes - we all know Z's are notorious for the fumes) enter the cabin, also that wheels have all lugnuts and good bearings (you don't want to lose the wheel while driving), and tires. It's a short summary. But if you fail, you will know what to fix.

Honestly, I am not sure about bumper requirements in MD. I am mentioning bumpers so the inspectors would have less cause to fail the car. I heard that other states require bumpers on cars. It's popular to remove rear bumper on early Z cars to have that clean look.

Thank God the car has bumpers...not all the rubber, but bumpers. The thing that scares me the most is the sheet metal that has been pop riveted in select areas. It makes me wonder what's really under there....Honestly, the body seems to be in real good shape. Just a few spots of surface rust are starting to show through the primer. I just want to get the car on the road but have to hold myself back because a "half-arse" job is not what I want done to this car...ya know.

Back in those days the Bumpers should have been call "Benders" because that is all they did was to bend out of shape if you tapped a poll, etc. At least the new "Rubber" bumpers have chance.

Gealic -- it's not so bad getting through inspection really... All the things they check for really (except the bumpers) ensure safety in the long run...

My 86 RX passed the first tim e-- and that thing was a bucket when I got it...

Make sure your exhaust has no leaks, no rust holes go all the way through, (you cant have any holes) the tie rods and steeering linkage are in good shape, good brakes and tires, all the lights and stuff work and you are golden -- these really are things that you probably would be checking for streetability anyways..

So far I have only had one accident in all my years of driving. I have to admit my front bumper did some damage.

My Z did a little hyrdo-plane action on me when I hit the brakes on a wet road and slammed into the back of a mini-van. I would say easily $500 in body repairs for the van. No damage to my car though - lucky for me:classic:

phi22b...i know it needs a battery, tires and brakes. the original owner said that it would start but then sputter and stall. he thought maybe it needed a new chjoke cable but never got around to swapping them out so he threw it in with a lot of other parts. i hope to put a battery in it this weekend and try to start it. i won't really know until then. i have noticed, under the hood, that there are a few parts that are not connected. i think one of the restoration books said that the one part was a fire something or other, supposed to keep the car from backfiring. i just really need to spend some time looking it over. does the Pep Boys up there carry any kind of parts that are serviceable on these cars? where have you gone, locally, for parts?

I have not purchased anything local oustide of the routine maint. parts.

I think your best bet will be Olympic Import Auto Parts. Its open on Saturdays too -- its over off of shady grove down by UPS (gaither rd. I think?).

They should stock -- or at least have in their warehouse close to anything you may need.
