Posted November 17, 200816 yr comment_266582 Hi -I just pulled out my late model 81-83 5 speed our of my 240, and plan to swap in a good used one. My old tranny always had trouble shifting between 1st and 2nd under hard acceleration and I would just like to inspect it to feed my curiosity.I have checked my manual and it seems pretty straightforward. I have removed all the bolts from the tail shaft and the circlip/bolt which holds the mechanism for the shifter. From the manual it seems I am just to bang on it until the tail shaft comes apart. It doesn't seem so easy, so just wanted to see if there is any advice to separate it. I am pretty sure I have the necessary bolts/hardware removed since I have read the manual. Should I try and jig up the tranny and try twisting the tailshaft off? or keep banging? Perhaps add some heat from a propane torch? I am guessing its going to be stubborn. Thanks! November 17, 200816 yr comment_266600 Don't twist. Most transmission cases have pilot dowels to locate the parts precisely. I've not had a 5 speed apart, only the early Type A 4 speeds. But in general, yes, you have to rap on it a few times to drive it off of the pilot dowels, which are a very snug fit. November 17, 200816 yr comment_266604 Last time I rebuilt a 240Z 4-speed tranny was in 1982. I did it in the living room of my apartment. I layed-down a blue plastic tarp on the floor with two layers of double corrugated on top for my work surface. Only took two days, one for dis-assembly and measurement, one for parts sourcing and rebuild.Worked fine, but my apartment smelled like transmission lube for a week afterwards. November 17, 200816 yr comment_266605 And after a couple of bad personal experiences (!) I'd say use a rubber hammer and be very careful if you use any type of pry bar in the process. November 17, 200816 yr comment_266619 I use an old MG knockoff hammer with a lead head. Softer than the aluminum case so no damage occurs. Works great.
