MikeW Posted November 20, 2008 Share #13 Posted November 20, 2008 Hey! I'm from Oregon. Let's see....what state was the team from that beat USC effectively killing their national championship hopes? The Trojans were ineffective against the Beavers this year. My first-ever trip to the west coast was to Corvallis. I spent a few days doing some consulting work at a company there called CH2M Hill. After work one day I did the rental car drive over the hills to Newport and then up the Pacific Coast Highway a bit. It was a memorable experience. I've since driven almost all of the highway in all three states but I've always thought that part of the pacific northwest would be a nice place to retire. Carl Beck Posted November 20, 2008 Share #14 Posted November 20, 2008 Hi Rob / everyone:Thanks !! Just today another friend called to see if I was aware of it, and of course I wasn't. I think Florida gets distribution last... When the article came out in the Sep. issue it seemed that everyone had it at least two weeks before it arrived here.So I'll be looking forward to seeing it. Mr. Brock spent about 4 1/2 hours shooting the photos and I was somewhat surprised the the editors used so many B&W pictures from 73, and only a few from the photo shoot.BRE has a color picture and a couple of B&W's from the Baja, of the Z in their archives at BRE2.nethttp://www.bre2.net/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=B&Category_Code=brearchivephotos240zsI "DROVE" the BRE Baja Z from Clearwater to Polk City, Florida weekend before last for the Roar & Soar.. about 70 miles each way. It was a blast to say the least. The reaction from the people on the road was pretty much the same. They would come up behind and stay there for a few seconds, then pull up along side and look the car over, then give a big smile and thumbs-up. I try to stay close to the speed limits as the car is a RED FLAG to cops, and I don't need the hassle of not having a rear bumper in place... other than that it is actually road legal. Given the fact that the last fill-up was at $10.20 per gallon, I don't drive it as much as I should. I also have a very hard time keeping with the speed limits.. this engine just sings at 7000 to 7500 RPMLOLFWIW,Carl B.

conedodger Posted November 20, 2008 Author Share #16 Posted November 20, 2008 Carl,You have done an exemplary job of restoration on this car. I recall you finding it about 10 years or so back. I had not seen it until now. I never got the September issue of CM... Kudos
Arne Posted November 21, 2008 Share #17 Posted November 21, 2008 ...but I've always thought that part of the pacific northwest would be a nice place to retire.Which is why I don't plan to leave, despite the fact that I could make a pile more in my profession in other parts of the country. But we love it here....and I don't need the hassle of not having a rear bumper in place... other than that it is actually road legal. That's right, I seem to recall hearing that Florida is the only state in the Union that actually requires (and enforces) bumpers. Seems to me I recall that you (technically) aren't allowed to modify bumpers from stock? Sounds Draconian to me. But shoot, where I'm at there's no smog testing, and H4 headlights have been Oregon-legal since 1976.I will eventually go back to Portland one way or another. I'd like to live there someday once again but it that doesn't happen our family plot is at Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.Stephen, I think I'd prefer to meet you in person while you are still breathing and talking. JimmyZ Posted November 21, 2008 Share #18 Posted November 21, 2008 Got mine with my Black Dragon order. I'm like HEY!! I know who that is!!! Nice pic of the Z too. Congrats Carl! You got the first month/first place in my book. That Austin Healey in "March" was also very nice. Jim
cunniwj Posted November 21, 2008 Share #19 Posted November 21, 2008 Carl, Congrats. I was surprised that you drove it to Lakeland. I guess Ahrens did a good job while you were up in G'ville.
bpilati Posted November 21, 2008 Share #20 Posted November 21, 2008 Carl, want to place a pic in Wikipedia? Send it to me and I'll upload it. I'm a Wiki editor. However the pic must have no copyright issues. Let me know.
geezer Posted November 21, 2008 Share #21 Posted November 21, 2008 Congrats Carl! Do you have any plans of releasing a poster sized print of the BRE Baja Z in that beach setting? If you do, put me down for one! I want mine signed by Pete Brock & Carl Beck. A single digit numbered copy would be nice.
Carl Beck Posted November 21, 2008 Share #22 Posted November 21, 2008 Hi Ron:I've been working on a couple of different Z Posters - just haven't had the time to devote to getting them done. I haven't seen what picture they used, but I'm sure it was one of Mr. Brock's. So I'll have to see if we can work something out on the Copyright...I bought a coply of Adobe Illustrator about six months ago, and I'm still trying to learn now to use it to layout a 2'x3' size print. It does so much, it's hard to figure out how to use it to do something simple!!
conedodger Posted November 21, 2008 Author Share #23 Posted November 21, 2008 Carl,The car is sitting on what looks like sand in a 3/4 front driver side shot from down low... Very blue sky in the background.
