I think I would just walk away...the guy has only a vague idea of what he has, and even less of an idea how to sell it.

You only hide what you don't want people to know, and as a vague seller, what you don't want people to know when selling something are the things that keep it from being valuable.

Let him stick it in storage. He's right. In 10-15 years even a sketchy possible/could be 1969 car will be worth three grand to someone. So he'll get his price. In in the meantime he'll spend $100-$200 per month storing the car. But he'll get his price.
