They say that the goose-step, ridiculous and inefficient as it may appear, became the march of choice for dictatorships around the world precisely because of its silly appearance. After all, only a terrifying madman could get thousands of able-bodied men to walk that absurdly in precise formation. It is a way to instill fear.

That’s pretty much the feeling we get when we see a swarm of bosozoku cars rolling down Japan’s highways. The cantilevered lip spoilers, the brick-square fender flares and yard-long exhaust pipes may look insane when parked. But get surrounded by a horde of them wreaking havoc on the expressway and it suddenly begins to make sense, even when a dude dressed like a freaking tiger rides a convertible’s door sill as his mohawked associate maniacally twirls a baseball bat in the air. It makes one wonder if they’re launching a siege on Bartertown or something, but it’s probably best not to ask questions and just get the hell out of their way.
