Jump Start Procedure

Hello

First let me say, I'm a new owner. I need to jump start my 72' 240Z. Do you connect the red clamp to the positive post and and negative clamp to the negative post on these 240z's or do you just attach the red clamp to the positive post and the black clamp to a solid metal component. The Chilton book says to connect clamps to both posts but I normally do the latter. Just wondering if its different for these cars. Don't want to mess up.

The reason you don't put the negative cable on the dead battery is because hydrogen gas, which forms as a battery discharges and loses its fluid is flammable, and a spark from the battery cables could, set it off. It's only a slight risk but it's more of a risk if the battery has been sitting for a long time with little or no air circulation.

Just make sure you CORRECTLY identify the Positive terminal.

Some folks arse-u-me that it is automatically the one closest to the engine, when in fact the positive post is the one UNDER the fender (unless a PO bought a reverse pole battery). This presumes the car is a LHD car, since in RHD cars it's generally NOT a problem, the battery switches sides.
