Tranny Leak

I have an 83zx 5 speed tranny and R200 diff installed in my 70 Z. I have some leakage problems that I had hoped to correct with a new rear seal in the tranny and a new large gasket for the diff. Unfortunately, I am still getting gear oil leaking at the rear of the tranny. I have heard that the shifter o ring can cause this problem, spewing oil around as you are driving, then dripping down once you are stationary. The major problem of having to drop the tranny, pull the housing off and get inside to replace a small o ring is not appealing to me, so I thought I would ask you guys if you thought it could be anything else less difficult to deal with. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I'm only aware of three places in the rear that it could leak, Stephen. One is the output seal, one is the shift selector shaft o-ring, and the last is the speedo cable drive o-rings. You've already done the rear seal, and generally the speedo drive is pretty obvious, so the selector shaft is probably it. Sorry...

Oh, forgot to mention I did replace the speedo cable o ring already. Also, ordered a new reverse light switch, as mine is leaking oil through the switch. Wish I could just reach through the top of the opening for the shifter and replace the o ring! Not excited about dropping the tranny for this ...

May have to wait until something else needs done before I have this done!

I read a response from Stephen Blake on an old thread that said that if you have a good inner shift boot that you could still have fluid come out if you have too much fluid in your tranny. I have a new shifter "O" ring and a new inner shift boot and I am starting to get the same dripping problem I had above. Figured I can remove the plug, drop the car to ground level and see if any fluid comes out, thus proving I have too much fluid. Any other thoughts?

about a year ago I noticed a small little spot of gear oil under my transmission as well. I looked underneith and found that it was coming from the reverse lamp switch. After I Replaced it, No more leak :D So replace that since you say yours is leaking and see if that takes care of it. It did for me luckily. It fooled me too because it looked like it was leaking further back but what it was doing was running down from the switch, then it would run along the bottom of the tranny towards the rear then drop on the floor. Leaks can fool you like that sometimes :)

Good luck and I hope that takes care of it for you too.

(Edit)-Never mind I noticed your response about the reverse switch was dated 12-23-2008, 05:32 PM so you probably already replaced that. I need to start paying attention to the dates since more people around here now are bringing back old threads lately :D

Sorry, Jared, for the old thread. I replaced the reverse switch already, am assuming I have too much tranny fluid, which is overflowing through the shifter "O" ring (I guess!). Everything else has been replaced already.
