'73 240 AC blows fixed! Not sure where prob came from, though.

I stripped out my interior this weekend, prepping the car for some floor board and quarter panel patches and then a new paint job. I didn't take the dash out, but I took it mostly apart.

The main reason I took apart the dash was to figure out why the AC didn't blow much air. The PO had put in the Honda blower, yet didn't get any more flow. Attached are pics of what I found. Basically, its a 4x4 inch piece of foam that is smooth on one side, and only a quarter inch thick. The smooth side did not have any glue on it, so it wasn't previously attached to something.

It was stuck in the center of the main duct, right where it splits to come out the center and the two sides. Does anyone know what it came from? Could it have been sucked in from outside the car somehow?

Matt

This appears to be from the main door/ flap/diverter thing . (to me)

It should seal the large flapper against the body of the housing.

If I remember correctly the foam side was glued to the flap itself.

The smooth side sealed against the body of the housing.

(you would think it to be opposite, however the smooth side did do the actual sealing of the two surfaces)

Maybe it never got glued to the flap??

Half the foam on mine was deteiorated. and was crumbling away.

So I removed the whole maryann and replaced it with some gray weatherstrip type foam from hardware store to seal in its place.

The foam seal was only "Glued" on one side.

This was on our '71 which since has been given away..=(

Hope this makes sense, I don't recall the technical terms for the parts...

I figured out where the problem came from. On the underside of the cowl panel on the passenger side, I found a rectangular sticky spot the exact shape of the foam that was stuck in my AC vents. I don't think I'll glue it back on there. I wonder why it was there in the first place.

Hello, the spot on the underside of the Cowl was a white rectangular rubber foam, used on the drivers and passengers side of the cowl to act as a spacer. While working on my '72 i noticed the black/grey foam square on the blendor of the evap system like "Friar-Tuck" said. -Todd
