stock exhaust to header?

Here's my question. I have a California car, '72 Z, and I'm swapping the stock exhaust for an MSA header and exhaust system. Besides the smog pump, what other parts off of the intake can I get rid of (i.e. anti back-fire valve, and other recirculation devices)?

Well I live in Or. and am exempted . I have only the PCV valve on the balance tube. Everything else has been removed. I am running a 82 ZX with the same header and exhaust and a Cam. Just for kicks I took the Z to the State testing station and didn't say a word about any mods from '73 stock. I passed emissions testing! Surprised me. Gary

because of the car's age, it is exempt here in CA also...so you removed all of the smog equipment from the balance tube?...including the linkage that connects from the throttle to some sort of vacuum device? I'd love to be able to remove all of that crap!

Thanks for your reply

Yeah, it can all go. All you need is the PCV (like Gary mentioned), and the big vacuum hose for the brake booster. You'll also need a vacuum hose for the advance unit on the distributor, but that should come off the front carb, not the manifold.

These pictures are not a totally fair comparison, the de-smogged car was my ratty yellow car (since parted), and the smog-equipped is my much nicer red car.

With smog --

Without smog. Note that this picture was with automatic transmission and so it has an additional hose at the rear that you won't need for a manual transmission.
