Hood Emblem Fell Off!!

Recommended Posts

I was driving around on errands the other day and it occured to me that the roads had gotten considerably rougher after the couple weeks of snow we had.

When I got home I just happened to take a look back at my hood, an the emblem was barely hanging on! It had apparently vibrated off.

It looks like the two pins were lined up and it simply got glued in place before. I was wondering what sort of glue should I use? Is this how it should be attached? The pins are clearly not a press fit.

I know 3M makes a good emblem adhesive:

You can get at NAPA or local auto part stores and works better than other adhesives I have tried. Carefully with other adhesives as the eventually do not hold and vibrate off. I had this problem with my drivers side '240Z' emblem.

The 3M VHB ( very high bond) double sided tapes are very good. I've used them in some of the products I've designed. I tested one to hold a plastic relay housing on to a painted metal surface. Broke the relay trying to remove it.

Warm (room temp) surfaces and holding the parts together for 24 hours will help ensure maximum bond strength.

I also vote for the 3M double sided tape. It fact that's what is holding several of the emblems in place on my 260Z as the pins have broken over the years. I also used the 3M tape to put rubber door seals back in place on my son's BMW that the dealer tried twice to fix without success.

Why not carefully drill out and install new pins , and use liquid metal adhesive to hold the new pins into the emblem. You can even use threaded stock, and fasten with nuts. 2 way adhesive won't last I don't think . Once prepped and re pinned, it should beat the original style '' one way '' stock fasteners .

I don't have a hood emblem to show, but here are some pics of one of two NOS Series 1 metal quarter panel emblems I have.

As you can see, new out of the box, it comes with both the barrel clips and adhesive tape.

I am drooling!!!! Where did you get those?
