Custom Rattle Can Paint.

I had taped up the outline of my upper hood release so that after I took it off I could put it right back in the exact same place. When I reinstalled the mechanisim, I then went to pull of the tape. Well, it also pulled off the paint under the tape. Bummed.

So I found an outfit on the internet, Automotivetouchup.com that said it will custom mix a can of spray paint for me. However, I asked for single stage paint. The fellow there responded that he can only mix "basecoat." What is the difference? Will it appear different on the underside of the hood next to the original paint? Thanks. I know I will have to prep the area, primer, sand and then rub out the paint if it works.

Randy,

My suggestion would be to look up your local auto paint supplier, have them match the original in single stage paint and buy paint and hardener. Mix these in correct proportions and put it into one of these inexpensive little paint sprayers that has a screw on propellant cartridge (Propell, or something close in name) and touch it up.

The advantage of this is the paint is much more durable than a rattle can which does not have the hardener. If the car is painted in single stage paint, I don't think you will be satisfied with trying to do a touchup in two stage system paint.

Just my thoughts, and good luck.

Dan

Thanks guys. I just called an auto paint house here in Costa Mesa where I work. They say that now they can only mix water base paint in California and that it is too thick to use one of the smaller paint sprayers. Are other states like this as well? Maybe I could order some from Arizona or another state?

I would be surprised if there isn't some form of compatible reducer for this paint which would work and allow the use of a touchup sprayer.

Chris, thanks for the heads up on Towerpaint. $31 a pint for enamel custom mixed to 919 yellow. That should shoot in the little sprayer. I'll mix some hardener in there as well. Had to get out of California to get something other than waterbased paint.

  • 1 month later...

If it's a water reducible paint just use more water...The paint sprayers are called PREVAL and they will shoot water reducible paints just fine.....Or any other kind.....BTW who ever told you epoxy, poly or enamal can not be sold in CA lied to you.....

You could also buy some of the 2 stage with your base and clear. Then buy a cheap airbrush kit from any hobbie shop. Then tape it off spray it yourself. I think the headache your going to face is matching how thick the paint is laid down. Otherwise your going to see the lines of the patch job.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered the paint so it should be here this week. I need it painted by the time of the MSA WCN. I am probably going to use a friend to do the spraying, he does it for a living. Should only cost me some beer and pizza. Fair trade. For me the learning curve on paint spraying would be high.
