Hi everyone. Im new here. I have a MSD and its used so I dont know how to hook it up.

I have a 240z with 280z engine with the e12-80 distributor

I understand the orange and black to coil and the thick wires to battery but what are the white, red, purple and green for? Do I need it and if so where does it go.

Thanks everyone for any help I can get.

Use Page 24 of the PDF above.

Orange to Coil (+)

Black to Coil (-)

Red to Black/white wire from the coil

White to the wire from the neg wire from the coil.

The Purple and green are not used.

The E12-80's © wire is the one connected to the white wire

The (B) wire on the E12-80 is connected to the Red MSD wire and the Black white from the Coil

Put a Jumper between the 2 wires on the Ballast resistor. The E12-80 doesn't need it.

You will need an MSD Tach Adaptor. It's red wire to the Small red or the MSD box and the White to the White MSD box

I think the above is correct but use the PDF as a guide.

Not trying to hijack the thread but does anyone have info on PO's dual mag distributor D6F4-02 ? I bought his 71Z with 280ZX (F54) motor, E31 head, MSD 6AL & Blaster coil. I'm having trouble with keeping the car running. My options for finding the "right" junkyard dizzy here in Albuquerque are nill right now. Would like to hear any thoughts/comments about it's compatibility with my current set-up, and/or a line on something better.

I know the original thread is old, but I would suggest using the diagram on p11 of the instructions, using the two wires connected to the pickup coil in the distributor and connecting them to the violet/green wire pigtail coming off the MSD. This enables you to get rid of the E12-80 module which is one more source of potential failure.

As far as what to get, I'd go with any NA 280ZX distributor, disable the vacuum advance so that it can't move at all, run the MSD as described and set timing at idle to around 18 degrees BTDC.
